57Years at the Union

The tradition of the student union stretches back to
1 9th century England. The idea was to give students a place
to gather, debate, discuss the world and relax. At NT, the
tradition of the student union finally took off in 1948 with the
purchase and remodel of an old U.S. army surplus barracks.
The facility was opened a year later as the Memorial Student
Union at the newly re-named North Texas State College.
Since then, much more than the name has changed at
NT, and the Union is doing what it can to keep up. Though
the current building opened in 1976, many areas were
completely renovated this year to provide students with high
quality services, and to continue the English tradition of the
Union as a gathering place. To those ends, the Campus
Chat and the Corner were updated and given a face-lift.
The Corner was renovated completely to provide more food
outlets and a full service coffee bar, and Wells Fargo bank
donated a new lounge for student use, located on Level 3.
Everything old and new about the Union was celebrated
this year at Union Day. Union Director Jim Nicklas explained
that Union Day started with the opening of the new building,-~a=t- "--\

Nardin part to thank students for their patience during a period in
construction of the new building when the Union's services
were housed on the first floor of Crumley Hall. When the
Union celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1999, Union Day
also came to represent the anniversary of the opening of
the original building and the Union's contribution to the
student body. This year, 57 years of service was celebrated
with music, free food and games, and a 100 square foot
birthday cake.
Union Day is a party for the entire campus. People who
are usually tucked down hallways and in offices come
out to the main corridors to meet the campus community.
Many of the food and drinks for sale in the food court and
Corner Store were available for sampling, and The Spike
Band played rock and roll classics from the 1950s. Union
Day is an effort by the staff to make students feel welcome
and appreciated, and a chance for those who may not
have explored the building to roam around and learn how
services provided at the Union can help them make more
of their time at NT. e
