Early Graduates of Cleburne High School, 1890-1909
by M.R. BucknerThat musty old box full of papers found
in grandma's closet or attic may actually be a
treasure chest.
If you take the time to look through it,
you may find fascinating historical
documents, like letters, birth or marriage
certificates, military service records or old
newspaper clippings about relatives.
One such box from my great-
grandmother's home held a collection of
early 20th-Century Cleburne High School
graduation announcements, wedding
invitations and Christmas cards. Among
these carefully tucked-away mementos was a
printed list of all Cleburne High graduates
from 1890 to 1909.
The list was published in 1910 in
preparation for the alumni reunion that year.
It gives occupations and/or marital status of
the former students and identifies whichones were no longer living.
A quick tabulation of the list reveals that
Cleburne High had 242 graduates in its first
20 years, with one student in the first class
and 23 in 1909. The largest class was 1908,
with 24 graduates. There were no graduates
in 1891. Eleven former students had died
before 1910. A fourth of the graduates were
employed as teachers, including 15 members
of the class of 1908. Twenty-five taught in
Cleburne. Twenty-one were enrolled at
various institutes of higher learning,
including eight at the University of Texas,
two at A&M College, one at Baylor and one
at the U.S. Naval Academy.
About 40 percent of the graduates still
lived in Cleburne.
The original document is now in the
Johnson County Historical Museum at the
courthouse. Here is a transcript of it.To Alumni of Cleburne High School:
