MATTERS AT LAS PALOMAS
Fake War News Sent Out By Eordgr
Newspaper Correspondents
Mexico City Two Republics
The American newspaper corres-
pondents in the City of Mexico
continue to receive impatient in-
quiries from Northern papers ask
ing why theydo not wire complete
accounts of the border revolution
to the papers they represent To
the protests that nothing of a se ri
uus nature has occurred and that
the affair does not even create a
ripple of interest fn the city the
papers intimate that the correspon-
dents are suppressing the news of
the hairlifting engagements which
are sent out almost daily by the
bright young men with scarlet im-
aginations who pose as war cor-
respondents on the border
To tho editor of the Two Repub-
lics yesterday a statement of every-
thing which has occurred in con-
nection with the affair at Las Polo
mas was inad The party making
the recent attack on the custom-
house on the line between New
Mexico and Chihuahua was com-
posed of Mexican renegades It
wi6 organized inTexa The out-
laws numbered 2S in allj including
several exguards who hud been dis-
charged from the Mexican service
Before the attack on the diatom
housewas made three of the band
deserted The 25 remaining swoop
ed d
most
the range on their customary look-
out for smugglers the two or three
Mtard6 on duty at the house were
soon overpowered The party
sacked the place but secured no
money Taking what they want-
ed in the way of pistols and other
small supplies as well as a tew
horses from the corral the biindits
pulled for flie hils After the
raid twelve more of the outfit be-
came fnghtened at the pursuit
which was being pushed too closely
upon them for comfort and soon
deserted crossing back into Texas
Several of those crossing back into
the United States have been ar-
rested and application for extradi-
tion hs been made to the United
States government by the Mexican
authorities
The thirteen renegidea remain-
ing soon after appeared at the
town of Casas Grandes bent on
plunder Their presence being
discovered in tlie locality the cit-
izens of the pueblo who are light-
ning on tho shoot by reason ol lit-
tle affiirs ot a social nature in past
3ears with the Apaches wcrt out
to see what was wauled As a re-
sult of the courtesies exchanged
there were two lesa revolutionists
in the land of th > living This was
the battle between revolution
sts1 and federal troops in which
the border correspondents had the
army of the republic defeated with
great less
There now remain hut eleven in
the crew which has been causing
the trouble and as the government
has 400 soldiers in tlie field paced
there on account of the reports at
fint sent out it is probable the
band will make an t attempt to es-
cape back into Texas afthe earliest
opportunity
As atelegraph office has been
established at Las Palomas the
War Department is in houry com
munication with the seat of the
late disturbance and everythig
being now on a peace footing again

Everybody has heard of Texas as
producer of cattle but compara-
tively few areawrfre that the State
raises nearly cno hird of the cot-
ton grown in the entire country
Although her cotton crop this yeai
is about 300000 bales less than
last years it is still 400000 bales
greater than thecombined pro-
ducts of Mississippi and Georgia
and about 200000 b les larger
than the yield of Alabama Louisi-
ana and the two Catolinas The
cotton crop tor Texas is valued at
90000000 which is considorabl
more than the value of her cattle
Texas has also a huge corn crop
this year and in wheat and oats
she has dune better than most of
the States St L Republic
