one approaching the most often voiced reaction is
to current prices of anything, anytime where more
than two are talking.
Late Christmas shoppers are going to pay for
their thoughtlessness in the next three days. More
practical gifts are being purchased this year, and
this denotes a lot of thought given to the person
whom you love, or regard most highly.
A friend pointed out that a slice of bread costs
four cents. This when no-host buffet lunches or
dinners brought friends or special interest groups
together. Since, we've noticed that special bread
is St a slice.
And we have lived in the days when a whole loaf
of "store bought" bread cost St.
We bring this to your attention as the current
discussion is the high rate of inflation and the pos-
sibility of a wipe-out, in other words the ugly word,
Depression.
Another current expression is, "I'm going on a
diet after Christmas." Well, since we live in the
days where when one goes on a diet one must join
a peer group attending Pat Walker's Salon,
Weight-Watchers, Tops, Inc., Elaine Powers, we'll
give you a tip Elaine Powers uses which isn't half
as much fun reciting and exercising at home alone,
but more saving and more effective.
It is: Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie!
This is the way we have fat thighs!
CC (Coca Cola) Vodka, Gin and Beer!
This is why we all are here!
Simple? Yes, but the franchised salons have
made a fortune in these years of easy come, easy
go.
We wish you a Merry Christmas with the wish al-
so for a Merry New Year which includes a healthful
and prosperous one for you and your family. And
with a hope that more of us will develop more con-
sciousness regarding obligations as responsible cit-
izens.
We have a fine growing community, and we can
continue to build a sturdy base for future genera-
tions here, according to how we educate them in
practical living.
For those who add the pleasure of an impractical
Christmas Punch to all the other goodies one has
Christmas Eve and Day, the following is the cheap-
est and the best punch: One gallon apple cider, one
medium jar crabapple juice and one large package
of Red Hots. It is colorful, spicy and tastes wonder-
ful, if one likes apple cider.
COLLEGE STATION -
Six safety steps will pre-
vent "miles* of auto acci-
dents, says Claudia Ker-
bei, a consumer miorma-
tion specialist.
These steps are "fight*
back" measures against
major-accident causes,
she says.
Mrs. Kerbel is with the
Texas Agricultural Ex-
tension Service, The Tex-
as A&M University Sys-
tem.
Practice these steps-
and drive defensively:
• Observe speed limits.
Speeding is a factor in
more than 25 percent of
all accidents.
way-even if the other
driver is wrong.
Failing to yield is a
factor in more than 20
percent of ail accidents.
• Keep a safe distance
from the car ahead of
you.
Tailgating is involved
in almost 10 percent of
all accidents.
• Drive during daylight
hours when possible.
Three times more peop-
le are killed at night
than during the day-
time.
• Do not drink and
drive.
• Drinking is a factor in
about half of all fa-
tal traffic accidents.
• Use your seat belt.
At least 12,000 more
lives would be saved
each year if all car pas-
sengers used seat belts,
according to the Na-
tional Safety Council.
