The Reagan County
Owls have played four
games in the last week
and are now sporting a 9-2
season record. The Owls
got their first defeat of
the season against El
Paso Cathedral, a Class
AAA school and then
dropped their next outing
to Kermit, a Class A A
school. They won their
third game in the Reese
AFB tourney and most re-
cently they defeated
Crane last Tuesday night
in Crane 70-53.
The game was tied 6-6
in the first quarter with
4:13 remaining. Crane
later jumped out ahead
12-8 but Bobby Woodard
put the Owls back into
the game with a good shot
under the basket.
James Phillips had a
hot hand Tuesday night as
the sophomores got one
basket in close and then
stole the ball from Crane
on their throw- in and got
another score to tie the
game 14-14. Woodard
went to the free throw line
with :04 left in the first
quarter but missed his
shot. Phillips grabbed the
miss and he missed his
first shot but rebounded
again and put in a basket
at the buzzer to give the
Owls a 2 point lead 16-14.
Longoria, Williams,
and Bitner all hit good
shots in succession and
Phillips got another to
make the score 24-18 in
favor of the local boys.
The Owls played steady
basketball with James
Phillips coming through
on both offense and de-
fense for the Owls. The
Owls went in at halftime
ahead 37-24.
In the third quarter they
were still playing steady
ball and with 3:10 left in
the quarter they pulled
ahead by 20 points, 51-31
with a Woodard jump shot
from the free throw line.
Terry Tennell put the
Owls ahead by 21 points
after he sank two free
throws and the third quar-
ter ended 54-35 Reagan
County.
Terry Nunnally got him-
self a score and later so
did Mark Noland as the
Owls were still ahead by
20 points with 3:50 left
in the game. Coach Barry
Voss was substituting
freely. Byron Bitner hit
one shot of a 1-1 to get the
Owls 70th point to finalize
their scoring. The game
ended 70-53 in favor of the
local boys.
James Phillips had the
hot hand for the varsity
boys as he knocked in 21
points to lead all scorers.
Bobby Woodard had 16,
Bitner 13, Owens 6, Nun-
nally 3, Noland 4, Lon-
goria 4, and Tennell 3.
The Owls will travel to
Sonora for their next
game tonight (Thursday
and then will take a break
for the Christmas holi-
days. They come back
and will play a home
game against Iraan here
on January 2.
January 4, 5, and 6 the
Owls will host their own
tournament which will
have fifteen teams com-
peting in it. The top half
of the bracket will have
Crane, Rankin, Sonora,
Marfa, Alpine, Wall, and
Mason in it. The bottom
half of the bracket will
feature Ozona, Imperial,
Reagan County, Eldora-
do, Kermit, Iraan, Junc-
tion, and Fabens. The
Reagan County Tourna-
ment directors are Barry
Voss and Melvin Burns
and this will be the 48th
year for West Texas' pre-
mier basketball tourna-
ment.
