only advantage is its proximity to

dead town of Matamoros on the

The above uncalled for attack
upon this section by a paper pub-
lished in the same state is difficult
to explain unices wo take it foi
granted that theHerald is afraid
that the building of the proposed
raihoad to JJrownsvillo may re
suit is it ceitainly will in the
completion of the Mixican Nation-
al railroad on the Monteiey which
would make this route a much
horter one from northern points
to Mexco City and by attracting
travel this way may injure El
Paso to some extent It is true
Brownsville is not a veiy lively
town from a busiuees point of
view but it is only because of the
lack of a railroad and the same
want causes Matamoros to be dull
also If Editor Smith will only
ccme down and tako a look at some
of the magnificent plantations we
hajo on the river and see what
rich resources this entire section
has all the way from Corpus Chris-

der why a raihoad should be built
here And the satuo feitile re-

with Editot Smith must be that he
is afraid this conntiy will soon be

AN ANCIENT TEXAS PORT
REVIVED
Southern States Magazine
Immediately following the Te xa
revolution of 1S3G Linnville spiting
into a flourishing seaport It was
the largest town in Calhoun county
niid did the biggest btibiness on the
Texas coast It was located on a
commanding bluff twenty feet high
overlooking Lavaca bay A moie
healthful spot for a town coud not
be found anywhere A big custom-
house was established by tho young
republic and vessels from the foui
quarters of tho globe crowded her
wharves They enmo in numbeis
from New Orleans tho North At-
lantic ports and Europe and the
city had ic seemed a most hopefu
future But tho place did not last
many years It was completely
wiped out of existence on a blight
afternoon in 1840 by a band of
bloodthirsty Comanche warrion
estimated at fiotn one to two thou
sand The people that did not es-
cape to the vessels were massacred
and tho destruction of the town
forra6 one of the saddest chapters
in American history bnt no albe
pen has touched upon tho event
and who among oven the intelligent
people of the country has read
about tho town and its awful fate
Rival port6 grew up and no effoit
was ever made to rebuild the town
and in all these long years cattle
have peacefully grazed over the de-
solated site
But strange as it may seem mod-
em capital and enterprise will
undertake the task of rebuilding
the place In the sammer the
Phillips Investment Co of Kansas
City Mo awealthy syndicate
bought all the country around
Linnville It has now been devel-
oped thai the syndicate will locate
a German colony on the property
The progam will include the open-
ing Df a postoflicc and BtoieP and
the rebuilding of the town Tho
country around rivals the valleys
of California in fertility of soiland
climatic advantages The coloniEt
will be selected and trnit growing
and the cultivation of vegetables
for the Northorn markets will be
their occupation The syndicate ie
subdividing the territory by aven-
ues roads and strcels and will
