turned into a spokesperson for the
underprivileged by hard-boiled
newspaper dame Barbara Stanwyck. As
usual in a Capra film, a vaguely fascistic
tycoon tries to take advantage of Doe,
only to learn the error of his ways from
the men in the street. Right.
■ Meet Me in St. Louis (1944;
MGM/UA Home Video). It wouldn’t be
Christmas without hearing Judy
Garland’s rendition of “Have Yourself a
Merry Little Christmas,” but this is one
tape that’s a treat year-round. Garland’s
family lives in St. Louis in 1903, the year
the World’s Fair was there. Naturally,
they’re upset when Dad announces he’s
moving the brood to New York. It also
features the “Trolley Song” made
infamous by Jan Hooks and Nora Dunn
as the “Sweeney Sisters" on Saturday
Night Live.
■ Metropolitan (1990; New Line
Home Video). It’s Christmas in New
York, and that means only one thing to
these rich kids — deb season! Actually,
this witty comedy takes a Fitzgeraldian
look at this race of over-privileged
young adults (or “urban haute
bourgeiosie,” as they like to call
themselves) and how they are a dying
breed. Writer/director Whit Stillman
worked magic with a low budget and a
cast of unknowns, and his shots of a
snow-covered Manhattan bedecked with
Christmas decorations are just gorgeous.
■ Some Girls (1989; MGM/UA
Home Video). Probably the least-seen
terrific movie of the last decade, Some
Christmas and terrorists go hand-in-hand
for Bruce Willis in his Die Hard movies.
Girls follows Patrick Dempsey (who’s
never been better) to Quebec City to
visit his girlfriend (Jennifer Connelly) for
Christmas. She announced upon his
arrival that she no longer loves him, an
then things get really quirky. The shots
of a snow-bound Quebec City, as well
as Connelly’s huge house, are
beathtaking, and there’s a frisky sense of
sexuality balanced with weightier issues
of life and death that make this a
personal favorite.
You’ll note a scarcity of gay
characters in these films — in the eyes
of Hollywood, we apparently don’t
celebrate Christmas. So until we get an
all-male It’s A Wonderful Life (the
thought of the Pottersville sequence
sends me reeling) or Desert Hearts Go to
the North Pole, these will have to do. ▼
