Texas House approves bill
The Texas House approved Tuesday a
controversial proposal that would make
it illegal for AIDS carriers to have sex
with spouses or lovers without telling
them of their condition.
Rep. Jim McWilliams, D-Hallsville,
attached the measure onto a bill that
classifies the sexual assault of a spouse
as rape. Both measures must also pass
the state Senate.
Rep. Debra Danburg, D-Houston,
sponsored the rape legislation and said
she did not oppose the AIDS amend-
ment for fear her bill would not pass.
Danburg’s proposed legislation has
failed in the House twice before.
Gays support Illinois bills
An Illinois legislative committee is
holding hearings on two bills gay-rights
supporters hope will become law.
One proposal would amend state law
to allow sexual orientation to be con-
sidered as a factor when sentencing
defendents convicted of crimes involv-
ing “aggravation.”
The other measure would prohibit
discrimination against gays in em-
ployment, real estate transactions, pub-
lic accomodations and financial credit,

bill that would repeal a state law mak-
ing sodomy illegal. The vote came after
the state Senate passed the proposal
27-20.
Opponents argued that repeal of the
sodomy law would encourage homosex-
uality and spread AIDS.
The law calls for imprisonment or a
$1,000 fine for people convicted of en-
gaging in “unnatural or perverted”
sexual acts between consenting adults.
The committee vote kills any chance
of a repeal this legislative session. It is
the fourth time the House of Delegates
has scuttled a repeal of the law after the
state Senate passed the measure.
U.S. approves condom ads
The Food and Drug Administration
has said that condom manufacturers
now can advertise that latex condoms
can help prevent the spread of AIDS.
Until earlier this month the govern-
ment had prevented condom makers
from making such claims, even though
Surgeon General C. Everett Koop and
others had been saying it for months.
Other types of condoms, such as those
made from natural membranes, may
have a different permeability, the FDA
said, and may not be labeled as a pos-
sible AIDS prevention product.
New Jersey upholds schools
The New Jersey State Supreme Court
has ruled that regulations that permit
children with AIDS or ARC to attend
public schools are legal.
The 4-3 decision is the first by a state
high court to address rules that allow
pupils with AIDS to continue classes.
The New Jersey rules say that a stu-
dent with AIDS is to be allowed in school
unless certain exceptional circumstan-
ces are present.
State officials said the rules are based
on a belief that “AIDS is not transmitted
through casual contact as would be pre-
sent in the school environment.”
Royal jewels aid research
When Edward, Duke of Windsor gave
up Britain’s throme for the American
woman he loved, she didn’t give up the
crown jewels. Edward showered jewels
on his wife, Wallis Simpson, throughout
her life.
Simpson died last year and money
from the auction of her collection will
help AIDS research at the Pasteur
Institute in Paris.
Auctioneers at Sothebys expected the
jewels to draw bids of up to $7.5 million.
They were shocked at the $50.3 million
the jewels commanded. One 31-carat
diamond sold for $3 million.
Elizabeth Taylor bought a diamond
clip for $566,000 and said it was “the
first important jewel Fever bought for
myself.”
A Sothebys official said, “The jewels
themselves are stunning. Combined
with the love affair, they make the sale
unique.”
Finding may speed research
Scientists have found a way to make
bacteria produce a key protein of the
AIDS virus and say this could help
speed research on drugs to fight the
disease.
Reverse transcriptase, which the
AIDS virus uses to “transcribe” its RNA
into DNA — and thus reproduce itself —
has been put into a common bacterium
that is safer and easier to work with,
researchers said in Washington.
University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill researchers used genetic
engineering techniques to produce the
protein.
“It’s much more laborious, and to a
certain degree less safe, to study the
AIDS virus directly,” said Dr. Ronald
Swanstrom, one of the researchers.
“Now we have a very powerful tool in
the bacteria we can use with complete
safety and much greater convenience.”
NGLTF decries cost of AZT
Declaring that “bankruptcy should
not be the price for prolonged life.”
officials of the National Gay and Les-
bian Task Force are pressing Congress
to make an emergency appropriation to
pay for AZT for those persons not
covered by third party payment plans.
“Achieving federal funding for AZT
treatments will be a major priority for
NGLTF in the months ahead,” stated
Jeff Levi. NGLTF’s Executive Director.
