Stage #1 Completes Challenge Grant
Stage #1, Dallas’ contemporary Ameri-
can theatre, announced the successful
completion of a challenge offered six
weeks ago by an anonymous board
member. The challenge was that, for
every dollar raised, up to a total of
$24,000 maximum, the total would be
matched by 50 cents.
Efforts to raise the funds from board
members, subscribers, nightly audiences
and other friends of the organization
proved effective. The capstone to the
fund raising effort resulted from an ano-
nymous $ 15,000 contribution in recogni-
tion of the theatre’s production stand-
ards. The successful completion of this
initial fund raising phase follows upon
recent reports of the financial problems
for the theatre.
Board President Angus G. Wynne,
111, said, “Recent articles have indicated
the serious financial problems facing the
theatre community. Stage 1 believes the
key to success is to maintain our
mission—presenting new and recent
Dallas Opera Audience Responds
Positively to Supertitles
The Dallas Opera audience is respond-
ing positively to supertitles, according to
Plato Karayanis, general director.
Supertitles, which are simultaneous
English translations projected above the
stage, have been introduced with the
production of Wagner’s “Siegfried,”
staged Nov. 15, 18, 21 and 24 at the
Music Hall in Fair Park.
“Since this was our first time to use
supertitles, we designed surveys so the
audience could respond to the innova-
tion,” Karayanis said. “Out of the
hundreds of surveys returned opening
night, the overwhelming majority con-
tained positive responses and comments:
Only two were negative.”
The Dallas Opera plans to use superti-
tles in its new production of “Cosi Fan
Tutte,” which opened last night and will
continue on Dec. 2, 5, and 8 at the Music
Hall in Fair Park.
“Due to this positive audience reac-
tion, we will probably use supertitles in
most future productions to be sung in a
foreign language,” Karayanis said. Su-
pertitles will be used this spring in the
Dallas Opera’s double bill of “11 Maestro
di Cappella” and “11 Cambiale di Matri-
monio,” to be sung in Italian.
The supertitles were made possible by
underwriting from Criswell Develop-
ment Co.

Satisfaction—Laura Branigan. (Atlantic
Records). 12".
This is the third 12" remix off the “Self
Control” album, and by far, the best
dance song on the album. “Satisfaction”
is the style of Laura Branigan that
brought her to our attention. It’s a well
written and produced song that will get
lots of club play.
The remix is good, with the song’s
bassline, and moving rhythm, it already
had a great sound, but take all that and a
little more flavor, it’s super. The only
part that I’m not crazy about is the drum
breaks that go wild, but you never know,
the crowd might love the fury put into
those breaks.
Laura Branigan’s voice sounds great,
as always, and this song will be a big
dance hit, but 1 feel that it will not get
much radio play, at least not in Texas.

Coming to us from Germany, this haunt-
ing song is going to do well in the clubs.
It will remind you of the song “Send me
an Angel” by Real Life, and has a sound
like some of the early Eurythmics music.
This uptempo mellow song with Mar-
lowe’s strong male vocals make it some-
thing you want to listen to over and over
again.
The backup vocals and the great syn-
thesizer work add that little touch that
makes this song a hit.

lems. We are structuring the Board to
address specific areas of need for the
theatre such as planning, finance, devel-
opment, and marketing. Working closely
with the newly-hired full-time staff will
help us achieve our financial and artistic
goals.”
A financial analysis presented to the
Executive Committee of the Board of
Directors on November 17, 1984, indi-
cated that approximately one-half of the
total contributed funds needed for the
1984-85 fiscal year have been secured.
While a show sponsor for Stage l’s third
production, “Angels Fall” by Lanford
Wilson, must be secured, as well as the
remaining contributed income, the
Board’s recent committee restructuring
and the hiring of full time administrative
staff indicates efforts to secure funding
for the theatre’s ongoing effort will be
successful.
Dallas Opera Presents
“Cosi Fan Tutte”
The Dallas Opera opened a new produc-
tion of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s
“Cosi Fan Tutte” last night. Other per-
formances are scheduled for Sunday,
Dec. 2 at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, and
Saturday, Dec. 8, both at 8 p.m.
Set in 18th century Naples, “Cosi Fan
Tutte” is a comeday about two young
couples and their adventures in love.
This new production, with Lotfi Man-
souri as stage director, features sets by
John Pascoe and costumes by Peter J.
Hall. Richard Winkler is lighting
designer. Nicola Rescigno conducts the
performances, to be sung in Italian with
English supertitles. Roberto Benaglio is
chorus master.
The cast stars French soprano Rachel
Yakaras Fiordiligiand Canadian mezzo-
soprano Judith Forst as Dorabella. Dan-

ish baritone Mikael Melbye makes his
American debut as Guglielmo, with
American tenor Rockwell Blake as Fer-

The 1984 Dallas Opera season closes
with performances of Verdi’s “II Trova-
tore” Dec. 13, 16, 19 and 22. The cast
stars Stefka Evstatieva as Leonora, Giu-
seppe Giacomini as Manrico, Matteo
Manuguerra as Count di Luna and
Bianca Berini as Azucena.
