Refreshed from my Thanksgiving vaca-
tion, Jock is back to discuss upcoming
Christmas Sports Social Events, bowling
and our first letter from The Other Side

SPORTS BRIEFS
DALLAS—The Oak Lawn Softball
Association (OLSA) and the Oak Lawn
Bowling Association will be holding a
first annual Christmas Party—tentatively
scheduled for The Hidden Door—in
December. Date will be set this week and
noted here next Friday. Both leagues put
out a special invitation to Lamdba
bowling, Pegasus Volleyball, Oak Lawn
Tennis and other Dallas-Fort Worth
sports organizations to join us in a Holi-
day party. Sports celebrities will report-
edly be tending back bar and several spe-
cial surprises are in the offering. Tune in
next week.
MILWAUKEE—Six Dallasites com-
peted in the Holiday Invitational Tour-
nament in Milwaukee over Thanksgiv-
ing and came away with one winner.
OLBA’s Jime Beck managed to stay out
of the bookstores long enough to take
fifth in singles and 12th in all-event,
bringing home $100 in prize money.
There were 299 people who entered the
tournament, comprising a total of 59
teams for competition in the oldest gay
tournament in the U.S.
DALLAS—OLBA bowlers were hot
last Monday, turning in several very high
scores. Ken K. of Division B had a 266,
Dennis P. of Division C had a 255 and
Dan R. of Division A had a 243. Bad
Boys remain in first in Division I, The
Whiners in Division B and Smooth
Rollers in Division C.
Letters to the Jock
Dear Joe,
We live in Forney, Texas (just the
other side of Garland) and read your
sports column weekly. We subscribe to
The Dallas Voice through the mail.
What we want to know is why you
always talk about those mainstream
sports like softball, bowling or the Cow-
boys, but you never talk about the more
interesting sports, like wrestling.
Ever since the Olympics, our Forney
Wrestling Club—the Grapplers—has
been constantly growing. It currently has
a membership of eight, most of whom
wrestled in college and had their interest
rekindled by the great USA showing in
Los Angeles. We get together every
Tuesday night at Bill Bob’s house (Route
367 just past the feed mill), who has his
barn done up like a little wrestling coli-
seum, with mats and some stands so
people can watch. We’ve even got uni-
forms that match all the major college
programs that we got at that sports shop
in Mesquite.
So anyway, we’d like you to give us
some pub. Our membership is growing
and we have five weight classes. Anyb-
ody that would like to join is invited (7
p.m.), or if you’d just like to come watch,
we’d like that, too. A good, vocal crowd
helps urge any wrestler on. Give us a
plug, OK? and see you next Tuesday.
Doug (Dan) Dawson Grapplers
President
Forney, Texas
Dear Doug (Dan),
I try to do my best to weed out phony
letters. Lord knows, we get a lot of them.
1 find it very hard to believe that six
former college wrestlers live in Forney
and I think you guys are trying to put
The Jock on. Or is this just a publicity
stunt for one-of-those-type of clubs.
1 happen to be a wrestling buff myself,
so I’ll make you a deal. If you can answer
the following five questions correctly
and mail it back to The Dallas Voice by
midnight Sunday, we’ll come out to Bill
Bob’s and even bring a photographer. I’ll
make the questions multiple choice to
give you an even shot. Good Luck.
1. What college program has won the
NCAA Division I wrestling title the last
four years straight? a) San Francisco
State b) Iowa c)Ball State.
2. Two points are scored when you
receive a...a) leg lock b) Takedown c)
Rubdown
3. When the referee throws a towel into
the wrestling circle, what does that
mean? a) To clean yourself off. b) That
you give up c) End of the period.
4. Which of the following are not true
wrestling holds? a) the missionary b) the
shoulder smash c) the wrist restraint.
5. What does the winning wrestler do
following the victory? a) Have a cigarette
b) Drink a beer c) shake hands d) Take
the loser out to dinner.
That’s it for this week. Keep those letters
coming.
