Appeal to U.S. Supreme
Court still a possibility

LOS ANGELES — The Clinton
administration passed up an
opportunity to challenge a court ruling
that allowed reinstatement of a sailor
who publicly declared his
homosexuality.
The ruling affects Navy sonar
operator Keith Meinhold, who revealed
on national television in 1992 that he is
gay. Meinhold was discharged under
old military regulations that were
replaced last year.
John McGuire, an attorney for
Meinhold, said the Justice Department

let pass a Friday deadline to appeal an
August decision by a panel of the 9th
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San
Francisco. That 3-0 ruling found the
military can dismiss open gays or
lesbians only if they say they intend to
have gay sex, not for simply “coming
out. ”

second suspect in connection with the
brutal slaying of a woman last weekend
in a Cedar Springs parking lot.
Norma Castillo Mata, 23, was killed
and a second woman was slightly
injured in what police described as a
botched robbery attempt shortly after
midnight on Saturday, Oct. 15. The
attack occurred in a parking lot behind
The Bronx, a restaurant located at 3835
Cedar Springs.
Sergio Vasquez, 18, of Oak Cliff is in
custody and has confessed to shooting
Mata, according to Sr. Cpl. Lynn
Albright. Police are searching for Javier
Velasquez who is also a suspect in the

‘Now I know I’m not a Methodist anymore’
Berry stresses joyful message through MCC ministry
Rev. Delores Berry
By Steve Warren
CONTRIBUTING WRITER OF DALLAS VOICE
Rev. Delores P. Berry is a practical
dreamer, successfully surviving in the
world as it is without losing sight of her
vision for how it should be. That should
be a prerequisite for her work,
conducting an evangelistic ministry
within the Universal Fellowship of
Metropolitan Community Churches.
“We do not have to be unhappy to
be people of faith,” the lesbian minister
declares. “I don’t subscribe to the ‘beat
men, whip me, make me write bad
checks’ school of religion. My message
in the early days was more about
coming out. That’s still part of it, but
today it’s more a message of healing,
inner healing on issues that block us
from seeing God face to face and seeing
ourselves face to face.
Berry will bring her gifts for
preaching and singing the Gospel to
Cathedral' of Hope Metropolitan
Community Church on Sunday, Oct. 23.
Berry will preach at the church’s 9 a.m.
and 11 a.m. worship services, and
present a Gospel concert at the 6:30
p.m. service.
