entitled the 7:17.
"If you're looking for religion on
Sunday nights, then go elsewhere. If
you're looking for a spiritual communi-
ty, then the 7:17 is the place to be," says
Wynn.
Starting the new service at the
unusual time frame of 7:17 is indicative
of the alternative approach this min-
istry will take. The service will be com-
prised of a mix of alternative music and
multi-media spiritual exploration.
In keeping with the theme of com-
munity, even the seating arrangements
at the 7:17 will have an alternative flair.
"People will gather around tables
covered in butcher paper that they can
write and take notes on. The service is
all about freedom of expression. Most
importantly, attendees will have an
opportunity to connect and get to know
other people which is what gets lost
sometimes in a large, traditional ser-
vice," says Horelica.
Cathedral leadership recognized
recently that a more youthful cross sec-
tion of adults identified in popular cul-
ture as "Generation X" has remained
largely disenfranchised with conserva-
tive religion.
"There's a lot of Xer's and Xer's-at-
heart in the Metroplex that simply find
church too stuffy, too boring and too
preachy. While the Baby-Boom genera-
tion might dismiss that as apathetic or
lazy, the truth is that Xer's are infinitely
Frank
spiritual beings who crave that connec-
tion with a higher power," says
Horelica.
"One of our hopes is that this will be
a significant step in planning how we
worship in our new Cathedral during
the next millennium," says Lisa Carver,
director of communications at the
Cathedral of Hope. "Generation X is an
important generation for the future of
our church. We want to begin to make
the Cathedral accessible to them."
Horelica and Wynn have accepted
the challenge of reaching out to this
generation with full force. When asked
what guidelines might apply to such an
approach, the two respond with, "No
preaching, no suits, you don't even
have to bring a Bible, just come as you
are and be part of the journey."
The 7:17 will celebrate all expres-
sions of spirituality.
"Being Generation X is not an age, it
is an attitude. It involves having a thirst
for life lived more fully and more com-
pletely with a strong emphasis on com-
munity," says Wynn.
The 7:17 ministry debuts on Sunday
at 7:17 p.m. at the Cathedral of Hope,
5910 Cedar Springs Road. The evening
will include a display of works by local
artist, Greg Stadler. For more informa-
tion, contact Tina Wynn or Steven
