Irving polite probe alleged assault
against openly gay radio personality
By Tom Grego
Staff Reporter
An openly gay Dallas radio personality
told Irving authorities he was physically
assaulted near his station's biggest competitor.
Steven Champlin, known as Big Gay
Steven, is part of The Fitz Radio Show heard
weekday mornings on radio station WILD,
100.3. FM.
Champlin and co-workers said they had
challenged members of the Kidd Kraddick in the
Morning show to a boxing match to raise
money for charity. When their competitors on
KISS 106.1 FM would not answer the chal-
lenge, Champlin told police he went to the sta-
tion's Las Colinas studios on the morning of
Dec. 6.
Irving police spokesman Officer David Tull
said two men allegedly approached Champlin
and a co-worker outside the KISS studio and
told them they had to leave. During a shoving
match that reportedly followed, Champlin was
pushed down to the ground, injuring his leg.
"It wasn't life-threatening or crippling or
anything, but it was enough to meet the
parameters of an assault report."
Tull said Irving police never release suspect
information so he is unsure if the alleged
assailants were station employees or listeners.
Calls to 100.3 WILD FM were referred to
operations manager Reed Reaker, who did not
return messages.
But a spokesman for KISS-FM's parent
company, Premier Radio Networks based in
Sherman Oaks, Calif., offered a different ver-
sion of the incident.
"The Kidd Kraddick in the Morning Show held
a fashion show on December 6, outside the stu-
dio to raise money for Kraddick's charity
Kidd's Kids, which benefits chronically and
terminally ill children. Two representatives
from a competing morning show attempted to
disrupt the event and were escorted out by
security," according to the statement by
spokeswoman Amir Forester.
Tull said arrests in the case "are not emi-
nent, and it's not certain the case will go to
court, but it is still under investigation." ▼
