Former Green Party candidate

tion about the incident and promised to pay
A gay Dallas listener said he complained to
officials of Dallas radio station KVIL, 103.7 FM,
this week after the station broadcast a skit he
considered derogatory to gays.
Cliff Pearson, a freelance journalism and
policy analyst, said the incident occurred on
the morning of Dec. 13 during KVIL's Miller
and Dixon morning show.
Pearson, a Green Party candidate who
unsuccessfully sought election as a Dallas
County Justice of the Peace on Nov. 5, said the
skit featured a group of people singing for help
from the Christmas Fairy, a character por-
trayed by an effeminate man who answered
requests and made gift suggestions.
Pearson charged that the character "is sup-
posed to be h stereotypical gay man," and said
he was appalled at "this obvious stereotypes
against gay men."
KVIL operations manager Kurt Johnson
was not available for comment this week.

year, supplies and equipment for the school,
secured parking for teachers and even a tutor-
ing program for students.
School principal Almo Galindo said the
gifts, food and hours donated annually to the
school are worth between $30,000 and $50,000.
Dallas City Councilman Ed Oakley, a gen-
eral contractor for Caven who was at that first
dinner, said the relationship began with sever-
al hundred toys for children.
"I never in my wildest imagination ever
thought we could get it to this point," Oakley
said.
Caven purchasing manager Donald
Solomon said when JR.'s Bar and Grill remod-
eled in 1997, employees without families
asked if they could adopt a classroom in the
school. "From there it's just sort of grown to
where we have the whole school," he said.
more attention to the station's comments when
it comes to gays and lesbians.
"They are not going to be presenting the
Christmas Fairy anymore," she said.
Taher said Johnson told her the station's
morning personalities Mickey Miller and
Larry Dixon, intended the Christmas Fairy
character as a caricature of Richard Simmons.
The character was not intended to represent
gay men in general, tine station representative
told Taher. Simmons' name was not used dur-
ing the sketch.
"If they don't specify that they are making
fun of Richard Simmons, anyone who listens
to the show is going to think you are making
fun of a gay man, therefore making fun of the
gay and lesbian community," Taher added.
The number of complaints brought to
GLAAD's attention concerning derogatory
gay and lesbian characters has increased lately,
Taher added. In the last month and a half,
seven complaints have been filed against radio
stations around the country. ▼
Solomon said adoption of the school by the
businesses has outgrown Caven Enterprises.
"We've gotten the whole community
involved."
Galindo said 85 percent of the student's
families live below the poverty level defined
by the federal government "Most of the par-
ents can not afford adequate gifts for them,"
the principal said.
For its efforts Caven Enterprises won the
corporate sponsor of the year award last year
from the Dallas Independent School District.
Rick Espaillat, media director for of Caven
said "The bottom line is that they've learned
and we've learned at the same time, that it's a
partnership that works," said Rick Espaillat,
media director of Caven Enterprises. "They
don't prejudge us and we don't prejudge
them."
"These kids don't care, they haven't been
taught to hate, they haven't been taught to pre-
judge anybody as long as they are with people
