burning copies for friends.
"I've been laughing at the recording indus-
try [complain about piracy] for years, then it
happened to me," Vial says.
She's no stranger to humorous ironies.
Before going solo, Vial was a member of the
band Blanched Fury that, through a series of
coincidences, got a contract with the military
to tour many of the U.S. bases around the
world. An all-lesbian band in thrall to the
inventors of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" poli-
cy?
"It always just cracked us up," she admits.
"We got hired because we are girls — what
better thing to tell the troops than a girl band
was coming. Of course, we were all gay, but
nobody discussed that. It was a lot of fun." The
tour took them to Germany, Korea, Iceland —
even a detour to Finland, where they "played
a Tex-Mex restaurant in Helsinki for a month.
Surprisingly, the food was so good."
In between her music, Vial leads a largely
domestic life. She and her wife, Caron Barrett
(a Deep Ellum entrepreneur), got "Maui-ed"
this year in a small ceremony in Hawaii, and
she is close to her extended family.
"I am really close to my older sister and her
children, and I'm active in their lives — the
whole elementary school refers to me as Aunt
Debbie. I figure I'm not going to have children,
so this is the closest I'll get," she says.
Vial acknowledges that it can be hard to
meet with unqualified success in the music
business "because I don't know what makes
someone excel in the industry. If something
comes to a concert and is touched by you, it
marks you to them." But to break out of the
pack requires something more: I love all the
girls who sing at Sue Ellen's," she explains
before pointing out the hook that sets her
apart: "My hair is bigger." T
