like one of the Vandellas during their be-bop
number) or the lisping Golum-esque dwarf
Alberich, who scurries around like Truman
Capote in a serape. Taylor gets laughs almost
every time he walks across the stage.
Keleen Snowgren and the incomparable
Jenny Thurman are responsible for the most
costume changes and much of the singing.
Along with Stacie Goad's Brunnhilde, they
field a deliciously diverse musical triumvirate,
giving equal doses of passion and whimsy to
Disney-sounding ballads ("County Fair"),
Esther Williams production numbers ("After
the Gold is Gone") and honky-tonk country-
and-western yodels ("Makin' Guacamole,"
"Slide a Little Closer"). There's not a sour note
hit by anyone in the cast.
Lemons has his actors embody just about
every Texas stereotype, from the mullet-head-
ed redneck to the Highland Park deb. The style
is far from subtle, but opera is not meant to be
subtle. Das Barbecii slathers on the sauce thick
with all the fixin's — it's hard not to want to
eat it up. ▼

OUR LADY OF MASACARA RETURNS!
Tammy Faye Messner — the Queen of the Electric Church
— securely placed herself in the hearts of gay Dallasites
when she showed up in Lee Park to rally gay pride at
the 2001 Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade. One
of the most fascinating and witty personalities
in Christianity, Messner recently penned her
autobiography / Will Survive ...And You Will
Tool, which will be released on Sept. 12.
While she promotes her memoir, Messner
is making a special stop in Dallas to bring her
one-woman cabaret show Doing It My Way,
which is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 11 and will
be held at the fabulously renovated S. E. And S. Weisfeld
Center, 1508 Cadiz at Browder in downtown
Dallas. Tickets for the show ($35 in
advance, $40 at door) go on sale
Aug. 5 and may be purchased online
at lammyfaye.com or by calling 760-
325-6565.
