I must take exception to remarks attributed
to the Hon. Barbara Jordan ... in the July 1
A x 1. ... Post . ..
h ~1) "You don't see business expanding or rush-
t. King out to hire people. That is because the busi-
nessman doesn't believe recovery is here to stay.
And Congress can't do anything about that lack
of confidence."
It is precisely the actions of Congress that
have brought about the lack of confidence-no
energy policy, an inflationary tax rebate, doubt
about future taxes, whopping $60-$100 billion
deficit, etc.
2) "A balanced budget, like cheap fuel, may
, be a thing of the past."
A balanced budget HAS been a thing of the
past for years and years. I believe we've had
a only one balanced budget in the past 25 years.
3) "She (Rep. Jordan) invited individuals to
l * . 4 Aexpress their opinions on such matters as dereg-
ulation of oil prices and suspension of Clean Air
Act standards for auto emissions which are
under congressional consideration."
Here are my views: Why not try something
unique for Congress-get out of trying to run
the oil business. Wipe out price controls that
have been on oil products since 1972, deregulate
natural gas, get rid of the FEA, and put a halter
on some of the outlandish actions EPA is trying
in the name of pollution abatement. Do these
things and I'll guarantee her our domestic sup-
ply of oil and gas will increase.
