CHINA AND JAPAN
An American Traveller Speaks
Interestingly of Them
San Francisco CaL Sept 21
F CurtisWashington corres
pondent of the Chicago Record
was a passenger on the steamer
Gallie which arrived from the
Orient on yesterday He went
to Japan in May last to study
the commercial and industrial
prospects offered Americans in
that country and lately he has
been in China which he des-
cribes as the pest breeding
center of the universe Cholera
has attained fearful proporlions
in China said Mr Curtis the
Chinese dying by thousands
The desease is confined almost
exclusively to the Chinese
Speaking of the commercial
and industrial future of papan
Mr Curtis said I return con-
vinced that America has no
market in the Mikados realm
for manufactured goods The
Japanese make almost eveiy
thing they want They are
stealing our patents and copy-
ing our inventions and are now
almost ready to export their
wares and thereby enter into
ruinous competition with the
other nations There is how-
ever a splendid market there
for machinery as well as cotton
iron and other raw materials
cotton particularly as the Jap
anese are now using cotton very
largely and here is a pointer
for American cotton producers
While a great deal of American
cotton is used in the Orient it
goes through EnglisTi hands be
fore if reaches the Japanese
and American growers are de
prived of the commissions
which go into the pockets of
the English middle men in
Liverpool Our cotton ought
to be shipped direct to Japan
IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
A story is told of a joung
lady who found a package of
love letters that had been writ
ten to her mother by her father
before they were married The
daughter saw that she could
have a little spoit and read
them to her mother substitut
ing her own nanir for that of
her mother and a lino young
man for that of her father The
mother jumped up and down in
her chair shifted her feet and
seemed terribly disgusted and
forbade her daughter having
anything to do with the young
man who would wiite such
sickening and nonsensical stuff
to a girl When the young lady
handed the letter to her mother
to read the house became so
still that one could hear the
grass growing in the back 3ard

tion is a very simple one
When a banker or coffee
merchant or whoever it may-
be determines to send gold
shipper all government respon-
sibility ceases
The yellow metal is put in
canvas bags and carted to a
cooper whose specialty is mak-
ing kegs for shipping gold
The gold kegs are about eigh-
teen inches high and ten inches
in diameter at the center The
are made of oak and are firmly
strapped with iron hoops Tho
packing of a keg of gold is an
eas3r matter to the gold coop
er A keg will hold 350000 of i
gold coin and a cooper will
have a million dollars of it all
packed ready for shipment in
on hour s time Each keg
weighs 225 pounds and is sec-
urely sealed It is then ready
for the truck man who takes it
to the steamer
A great enriosity exists in
Weitytown Westmoreland co
Pa Several years ago a citizen
bored a well expecting to find
gas After going down 900 feet
they were compelled to aban-

water Ever since that time
the well has been filled with a-
very peculiar water It is cold
in warm weather and in mid-
winter warm It has never been
known to freeze Once a ypar
it overflows and sends forth a
gas and cold water Wednes-
day morning the people awoke
to find a magical fountain
throwing water high in the air
A fire was kindled and thrown
into the foam A blaze shot up
far above the tree tops and it
cannot be quenched
