Tin seems good grounds for
np on the apron extension the
powerfnl ebb currents will be
under control and will soon
scour away the narrow ridge of

confidently look for the reaiza
tion of anticipated results
Mr Blackburns cinch on
that senatorial chair is not snch
a dead sure thing as his free
silver friends professed to think
Kentucky is not so much affect-
ed with populism after all The
senator should have profiled by
the recent experience of the
free silver candidate who lost
the gnbernatorial race for the
Kentucky democrats lately

T > or works as will bn eeu In
the following editorial from the
Express
The bill granting a three
T < ar extension of time to the
Aransas Pass Harbor Company
in which to complete the harbor
works has become a law This
bill was passed unfortunately
before the protest of the people
could reach Washington so
there was no interference As
before stated the Express has
no desire to hinder the work
in the slightest degree nor has
it any but the kindliest fielings
ior the harbor company bnt
it believes that a tlmpyear
extension was unnecessary un-
called for and calculated to do
Tiarm rather than good to the
enterprise and the people carry-
ing it on One year would
have beencheerfully granted
and from all reports have been
ample The Express has the
earnest assurance of the man-
agers of the work however
that the ivork will bs in future
as now prosecuted with the
utmost diligence to the desired
nd In a recent repoi t Chief
Engineer W D Jenkins says
1 am pleased to state however
that the contractors have spar-
ed no effort to avail themselves
of every opportunity to work
npon the jettier and the re
cent progress made is beginning
to show its effect upon the
shifting sands The finishing
touches are being put upon the
apron extension on the second
contract is nearly half complet-
ed he 20 feet contour lines
outside and inside are drawing
closer together giving a per-
manent depth of 20 feet and
narrowing the ridge of loose
sand between them As soon
as the breakwater can be built
the pile driver
Have you everheard it he
asked of a small gronp the
other day
Yes of course its as old
as the hills said one but an-
other declared he had never
heard it so the populist orator
proceeded to relate it as fol-
lows
A farmer stood looking at
some men operating ja pile
driver watching with much
interest the great weight fall-
ing wiih a thud on the piles
and then slowly rising only to
fall again Finally the farmer
who had the habit of stutter
ing drew near and said to the
man who seemed to be bossing
the job Sssay Mister 111
coan s s sshow yon hhowto

top Now addedourpopulist
friend the pile driver repres
ente he national credit which
the democrats are trying to
keep up but which keeps fall-
ing like the pile driver and the
farmer represents the pop-
ulists
Yes interposed one of his
audience with this difference
yon will ssshow us hhow to
kkkeep the thing at the bot
torn
A pause ensued and then
the popnlist said with a crest-
fallen air
You stammer pretty well
And the meeting adjourned

TUB LATE SILVER MOVE
May Result Y iy Seriously for
Ihe Old Parties
Spocial to The Herald
Washington Jan 25 Cor
siderable anxiety admixed with
uneasiness exists in political
circles here concerning the ul-
terior purposes of the silver
in the ensuing presidential
canvass as matured at their
convention here Hither to the
efforts of the ultra silver men
to accomplish anything definite
politically in their several con-
ventions at the national capital
have signally failed
could do was to serure the
attendance of a small number
of leaders and under the auspi
ces of Senator Stewart of
Nevada and Gen AJ Warner
president of the American bi
metalic league fulminate re-
solutions and protests and
send them out through the
country broadcast The last
convention however was quite
an important meeting numer-
ously attended and particularly
enthusiastic in which republi-
cans democrats and populists
fraternized on silver and ap-
parently pooled their issues
on that question eliminating
all others
The trouble hitherto with
leaders has been that they could
not fuse with the populists
because of their advocacy of
various impracticable propo
sitionSjSnch as were enunciated
in the Ocala ptatform The
situation now has materially
changed Since the peculiar
contentions of t ie populists
have been laid aside tempor-
arily if not abandoned entirely
and their leaders especially
such men as Senator Marion
Butler of Norter of North
Carolina are now willing to
join hands solely on the silver
issue It is this fact which
disturbs the politicians If this
movement can be so manipn
lated republican supremacy
supremacy in Colorado Idaho
Utah Montana Washington
Oregon the DakotasNebraska
Missouri and possibly else-
where may jeopardized aad the
silver states of he South fol-
low suit in the event a square
out silver party can be formed
and a presidential ticket nomi-
nated upon the agreed plat-
form
The result of such a combina-
tion if effected xvould neces-
sarily impair if not destroy
parly lines and if not success-
ful might operate to throw the
election of president into the
house for lack of a majority of
the electoral college for either
candidate In view of these
facts the belief is expressed
that the strategy of the man-
ipulators of this convention
was to bring about this very
conlition of affairs and they
have high hopes of success

HOW DID IT EVER REACH
BEEVILLE
A very old map has been
discovered in the possession
of Dr T W Johnson in Bee
ville which may he of service in
settling the Venezuela question
This map which was made by
M D Arvilles in London in
1775 shows the boundary line
of the British possessions to
begin near the mouth of th
Orinoco river and run in a
senthwesterly direction some
miles west of the Esseqnibo
river which river is claimed by
Venezuela as the true line
and it is belieTed this line as
mapped by Arvillei is some-
where near the line rnn by
Shoumberg upon which the
British now base their claim
