Tho Apparatus Is Very Simple and Inex-
pensive bnt Attendance Is Costly In
Addition to Savlnc a Ufe Each Incuba-
tion Contributes Useful Knowledge
In sharp contrast to tho lavish reck-
lessness with which noble splendid
lives are often sacrificed to somo futile
ignoble cause is tho infinite vigilanco
and care tho ingenuity and skill thafi
aro sometimes expended upon preserving
and fanning into flamo a little spark
that has hardly attained the dignity of
being called a life
Doubtless most are familiar with tha
metal receptacle 4 by 2 standing on
fonr legs abont waist high with a small
water pipo and heating apparatus on
one sido and a cold air pipo and addi-
tional apparatus on tho other known as1
the infant incubator Bnt perhaps few
realize the patient skilled watching and
tho consequent expenso necessary to tha
bringing forward of tho little inmatef
until it shall be able to toko its placo in
tho world as a real live and kicking
baby
At tho first appearance upon lifo9
stago of this speck of humanity scarce
half mado up it is swathed in a bun-
dle of absorbent cotton and laid in its
littlo nest with nothing to distract its
attention but a perfectly accurate ther-
mometer to which it however seems
wholly indifferent The glass lid is then
almost closed Experience has taught
tho physicians that it is better to leavo
it open a littlo space A trained nurse
at once takes her place by the sido of
this unique object nnd keeps constant
guard over temperature conditions of
air eta Absolute quiet and a subdued
light aro among tho requirements Tho
temperature may rnngo from 90 to 98
degrees In cases of low vitality it ia
kept at 98 and with tho lnost robust ia
never allowed to go below 90 degrees
Then every hour the littlo charge must
bo fed This is sometimes accomplished
by means of a dropper but more often
n little rubber tube is passed through
tho mouth and esophagus into tho stom-
ach and int this tube is slowly poured
a dram about a tcaspoonful of pro
pared food Thus in the 24 hours about
three ounces of food are absorbed This
food in mado after a formula arranged
by a most expert chemist and changes
from day to day according to tho devel
opment of tho baby
personage arc not therefore great bills
of expense but its lodgings its physi-
cian and nurses make up a pretty sum
for its indulgent parents
It will easily be ecen that the only
requirements for raising a baby in an
incubator ara a perfectly even high
tbmperarurp puro nir and a food tho
nearest approach possible to its natural
food But simplo as this sounds it has
taxed every rcsourco of tho best cngi1 A greater number of men than of
neering and sanitary authorities tho women become stout late in life No
finest bacteriologists and chemists ifl satisfactory explanation of this fact ia
tho country to arrivo at tho present I offered
state of advancement An incubator as
it is now perfected costs about 200 A
few firms have them to rent and as th
demand for them is naturally small ono
may be rented at any time
Dr Botch who i3 responsible for
many of the recent improvements of tho
incubator has been very successful in
its use IIo insists upou having always
two trained nurses so that no moment
may there bo tho risk of a chango in
conditions which might turn tho scalo
the wrong way This of itself means
if 00 a week and tho time of incubation
is usually from two months to ten
weeks But the baby so saved comes in
timo to bo quite tho equal of his fellows
who followed tho good old fashioned
ways
Hospitals cannot boast as great suc-
cess from their experiehco with incu-
bators although Eeveral iucludo one
among their appliances In tho first
placo it is often a caso where tho tiny
ilohammed must go to the mountain
nnd it is almost linpossiblo to accomnlish

prematura birth to struggle with but
tho worst factor of having come from ill
conditioned badly nourished and often
intemperate parents Besides no nursa
in a hospital no score of nurses can so
arrango that one shall always have an
eye on the thermometer and the 50 or
more full blown babies will not upon
demand refrain their voices from weep-
ing out of consideration for the sensi
tiveness of their delicate littlo comrade
Tho hospital people are sometimes
asked why they make eo great an effort
to savo tho lives of these poor little
creatures who at the best must enter
tho raco of life fearfully handicapped
Their argument of course is that the
tiniest life in embryo has a right to its
cbanco but their interest is doubtless1
largely scientific Physicians from
ilaino to California from the St Law-
rence to the gulf arc constantly looking
to these hospitals for the latest and best
results of their researches and experi-
ments and by studying tho treatment
and watching tho development of cased
here tho incubating process included
they may be able to savo many a life
