Track repairs set for this week, district says
continued from page 1A
and logos and urged the board
to "put safety first" regarding
the 80 soccer players and 220
track athletes who are now "in
jeopardy."
Ondrece Love also spoke and
said some schools from other
districts are considering not
taking part in Wylie-hosted
track meets because of the con-
dition of the track.
One such meet, the
Commonwealth Relays, is slat-
ed for Feb. 27. Girls' track
coach Kate Wright said six
schools, Rowlett, Denton
Guyer, Forney, Piano West and
Lake Highlands, are competing
in addition to Wylie. Last year,
nine schools were represented -
there are usually eight, with all
schools bringing both a varsity
and a junior varsity. In 2009,
one school brought only a varsi-
ty, and Wylie East had only a
JV. Wright said there are only
six lanes of the track that are
considered safe enough for
competition.
In an e-mail dated Jan. 20,
Assistant Superintendent for
Business Operations Brian
Miller told Superintendent Dr.
John Fuller that track repairs
are planned. "We have been
planning the patching and
painting of the Wylie Stadium
and Shaffer Stadium track dur-
ing the past few weeks," the e-
mail said. "We did not want to
spend money repairing the
tracks earlier since they would
have been replaced if the bond
referendum would have been
successful. Since the bond ref-
erendum for athletics did not
pass, we are going to move for-
ward with repairs to the tracks."
Miller said the patching was
scheduled to begin Jan. 22 with
the goal of completion within
10 dayS. He said the patchwork
would be finished first. "After
patching and weather permit-
ting, we are going to paint the
tracks ourselves," he said.
In an e-mail to the school
board dated Jan. 24, Fuller said,
"The junior high tracks were
repaired last week. Weather
permitting, the track at Wylie
Stadium will be repaired this
week."
Miller's e-mail said the paint
was funded by the athletic
budget and the patchwork
would be paid for by the main-
tenance budget.
W1SD Board President
Ralph James said the cost to
replace all tracks would have
been about $150,000.
Regarding repair costs, Miller
said "the contractor charges
$2,500 a day and will spend one
day at each stadium."
Jan. 20, Athletic Director
Mark Ball said the repairs are

being made to the track due to
safety concerns, but the whole
track needs to be replaced. The
track repairs were delayed
because replacing the track was
in the November bond that
failed, he said.
"We were undecided because
of the failure of the bond refer-
endum on what to do.
Replacing the track was in all
three bond referendums. The
track would have been replaced
entirely if the bond would have
passed," Ball said.
"1 asked [Assistant Athletic
Director] Joe Pearce and
[Director of Maintenance] Don
Pool to examine every track in
the district for safety issues.
The patching of the track will
begin tomorrow including
addressing safety issues at the
other tracks. After patching is
complete the track will be
repainted. Yes, the entire track
needs to be replaced."
Wright said that since there is
a waiting list for this year's
Commonwealth meet, it's pos-
sible other schools may be
added if the lanes are deemed
safe enough following the
repair.
Regarding the end-zone and
center-field paint that presents a
slick surface for athletes and
doesn't look as good as a com-
plete replacement would have,
James said this, too, is one of
the casualties of the failed bond.
"The board had voted to
change the name of the stadi-
um," he said, "and we knew it
would have to be done to
accommodate Wylie East.''
He said the repainting, fund-
ed by existing budgets, is all
that can be afforded. If the bond
had passed when it was first
voted upon in November, he
said, or even in May 2009, the
turf would have been complete-
ly replaced by now.
"Turf only has about a six- to
seven-year life," James said.
"The color would have been
matched appropriately if we
had been able to purchase new
turf rather than do a patch job."
James also said that he had

spoken with architect Bob
Graham and Jerry Gallagher of
Gallagher Construction regard-
ing the turf paint job.
Gallagher secured the servic-
es of a company that paints arti-
ficial turf. After the company
did the initial coat there was to
be a second; however, the rain
and unseasonable cold weather
hit and the paint wasn't adher-
ing properly, James said, so it
was decided to put the second
coat off until spring break. (The
field would be out of commis-
sion for 10 days to two weeks to
let the paint cure properly.)
"Since there will be activity on
the field during that time, Dr
Fuller made the decision to wait
until summer when there will
not be a use for the field." James
said. "At that time, the painters
will return and paint that which
is required."
James noted that the arrange-
ment with the paint company is
that they will be paid upon com-
pletion of the job; since the ini-
tial coat proved unsatisfactory,
the district will only be paying
for one paint job.
Regarding the timing of the
sign and logo switch-out, James
said the board had voted to have
the stadium renamed as of Jan.
1. 2010, and they were striving
to have everything completed
by that date.
