newsof the arrest in Chicago
todaj of Eugene Burt who
murdered his wife and two
children in this city on the
night of the 24 ih of last month
and disponed of their bodies 1
throwing them in a cistern
The first intimation ofBnrts
arrest was a telegram received
by Sheriff White about 3 oclock
this afternoon from the Chicago

read as follows

from M N Piety a former
citizen of Austin who knows

ed that he had recognized Burt-
on the street and had him ar-
rested Burt has also been
identified by another Austin
guard
While Sheriff White has
thought all along that Burt
would be capturedj it seemed
to be the impression among
the people generally that he
had left the country and was
now safe in either Cuba or
South America
A reward of 600 was offer-
ed for Burls arrest 50017 by
the governor and 100 by Sher-

Later Sheriff White wired
the Chicago chief of police this
evening and asked how he
had Burt To this came the
reply that Burt had been ident-

knew him personally The re-

the governors office to obtain

the office closed locked and the

A CHILIAN MOB
An Italian Prince and Parly
Attacked in Valparaiso
San Francisco Cal August
17 The Panama steamer
City ol Para brings the story
that Prince Louis of Savoy
and some of the crew of the
Italian ship Cristobal Colombo
were attacked on the streets
of Valparaiso on the 16th of
last month by a Chilian mob
The Italians would have met
with the same violence as did
some of the crew of the Unit-
ed States cruiser Baltimore
had not the Italian party been
armed The prince and his
friends stood off the mob rntil
rescued by lhe police
Althought the mob used
sticks and stones none of the
royal party was seriously in-
jured The mob vented its
rage on the prince because of
the Italian unpopularity since
Italy sold the two secondhand
ed cruisers to the Argentine
Republic during the difficulty
between the latter country an
Chili The Chilian govern-
ment profusely apologized for
the occurrence and all refer-
ence to it in the newspapers
was surpressed

An Amicable Agreement
Nearer Than at Any since
the Trouble Beran
Washington Aug 18 The
cable report report from Lon-
don that Lord Salisbury has
yielded to Secretary Olney on
the crucial point of the Vene
zuelan negotiations that of
Venezuela including the set
tied portions of the disputed
tract in the proposed arbitra-
tion is regarded as an import
rant development by those in-
terested in this subject The
inclusion of the settled dis-
trict has been the chief ob
stacle in the way of arbitration
so that if the report of its re-
moval is confirmed the two
governments appear to be
nearer an amicable agreement
than at any time since the
trouble began
Lord Salisbury from the first
has insisted that these settled
districts were sovereign Brit-
ish soil which could not be
subjected to the judgment of
arbitrators Sectetary Olney
has urged that the omission of
this settled portion from arbi-
tration as the unsettled or
worthless sections were not
what Venezuela contended for
The latest view of this phase
was presented in a brief by
Mr Storrow a lawyer of Bos
ton of whose abilfty Mr Ol
ney has a high opinion The
Storrow brief was laid before
the Venezuela commission as-
a part of the Venezuelan case
but aside from this it is known
that its line of argument was
similar to that taken by the
secretary of state Mf Stor
row pointed out that the set-
tled district was in fact but
little settled that the number
of British colonists there was
comparatively insignificant
that their improvements on
which Lord Salisbury had laid
much stress were of the most
meager and primitive kind
and that the whole value of
the existing British settle
ments houses and improve
ments would be a comparati-
vely small sum From this
the conclusion was drawn that
thti socalled districts should
not stand in the way of the
adjustment of so large a ques-
tion There has been no inti-
mation that the view would be
accepted by the British until
the cable dispatches stating on
what is believedto be inspired
authority of the Bradford Ob-
server that the point was con-
ceded by Lord Salisbury
The further suggestion is made
that cash payment will be
made for the improvements of
the British settlers in case
Venezuela is awarded the ter-
ritory but no reference is
made as to who will pay the
indemnity although it is con-
sidered here to mean that
Great Britain will mollify
tnose of her subjects who are
dispossessed
