MKINLEYS MAJORITY
Governor Stone Analyzes the
Apparent Republican
Majority
St Louis Republic
Jefferson City Mo Nov 7
Governor Stone today made
the following statement on the
election of McKinley
Republican papnrs nre
boasting over McKinleys vic-
tory but they boast with little
reason These papers tako spe-
cial plpasure in parading Mc
Kinleys popular majority
Basing this majority on th ir
own estimates many of which
are cnitainly exaggerated they
claim that McKinleys popnLor
majority is phenomenal A
brief analysis will show how
little teal comfort there is in
this phenomenal majority for
the gold aionometallists
Concede that West Virginia
Kentucky Indiana the two
Dakotas Oregon Wyoming
and California have gone for
McKinley and as to some of
them it is still a matter of dis
pute as the difference is so
small that the official count
will be necessary to determine
the result what then A
change of 25000 voteb in these
eight States would have given
them to Bryan and thereby
make his election certain
Therefore in the States upon
which we depended for success
Bryan had a substantial pop
nlar majority Some of these
States necessary to his election
he lost but lost by such narrow
raarginn that a change of 25000
vole which is about one hall
of the vote > f an average cjon
gieasional district couid have
changed the entire result and
made Bryan the President
