Tonight's Artist
ROBERT PORTNEY
Robert Portney has received the first award
from the American Revolution Bicentennial
Commission in recognition "of outstanding
achievement by gifted Americans for their con-
tribution to the culture of our country." Within
the last few months Robert has won three First
Prizes in musical competitions - The National
Society of Arts and Letters-National Gallery,
The Hemphill-Wells-Sorantin Young Artist Competition, and the Mozart
Festival String Competition.
Formal lessons on a quarter size violin purchased for Robert when he
was four years of age began with Morris Shulik of The Philadelphia Orch-
estra. At twelve years of age Robert, a scholarship student, began his
studies with the world's most renowned violin teacher, Ivan Galamian, at
Juilliard. His performing career began at age nine when he made his first
major soio appearance with The Philadephia Orchestra.
Robert's future musical activities include performances in Europe, a
performance with the Boston Symphony, and recitals in the Midwest and
East Coast.
