Fish tliemselves are a unique and val-
uable recreation and economíc re-
source. Fossibly more iniportant, the
oeeuvrence of a kill often signals a
hazard affeeting other users of the
water and endangering public health.
Although the 1964 total, an estimat-
ed 18,387,000, was larger than ever ho-
fóre reported, it is highly unlikely that
it repre, sents more than a sampling of
the kills that aetually occurred.
This is due to differing reporting
procedures foilowed by various states
and to ohvious difficulties involved in
monitoring the country’s thousands of
mi les of fresh water streams and mil-
lions of aeres of lakes and marine wa-
ters.
Kills may occur from a sud clen and
deadly change in an aquatic environ-
ment. With time, the stream will usu-
ally recover and the fish population
return.
Water pollution cxerts its greatest
tooi on a fish population, not by caus-
ing individual kills, but by destroying
the natural habitat. Serious fish kills
seldom oecímr in badiy polluted water,
simply because they are usually few,
oř no fish in the stream oř lake to die.

BITIN’ FISH COMPETE FOP
SPOSTS’ EYE
Fresh water fisliing folks around the
Texas Parks and Wild.life Department
headquarters affeet at least slightly
boredom from the mighty huniting
season opening huhbub.
They reaOy doiťt go nrouod yawning
and all that, but they don’t minci say-
ing that somebody may be overlooking
a mighty good proposition from an
angling viewpoint.
In fact, Mariou Toole, inland fishe-
ries coordinator, said that the sum-
rner fishing slurnp is about ověř and
the really good fishing is just about
ready to happen when everybody?s
hustlipg araumd with a hot gun bar-
rel instead of a potent fishing pole.
Seasonal chaugo has sometlhng to do
v bii the jnrproved prospects, said
Toole, but the fish nowadays are get-
ting hungry “for anything thrown at
them.” This is because their diet of
smáli fish has been disturbed by the
smáli fish growing up, becoming more
elusive and also getting too big for
anything but the lunkers to swallow.
Thereíore the fish are foraging for
new food. And thať's where the fisher-
man comes into the picture.
What kind of bait?
Well, there’s nothtng better than live
bait, accorcling to Toole,
VĚSTNÍK
He rates the bait in this order:
Plain earth worms;
Live minnows;
Hardware, or artifieial baits.
Ycs, the moss and other surface
weed growth still are a problém. But
Toole suggested finding on open area
in the aquatic masses to drop a line.
And, then managed one of those “You-
can’t-miss” smiles as a clineher.

Goofy Geography
The Dallas post Office once was in
Nacogdoches, almost 200 miles away.
And Denison’s first country club wras
hundreds of miles away in Creede,
Colorado!
Dallas depended on the Nacogdoches
post Office tor mail during the days of
the Rcpublie of Texas when Nacogdo-
ches County covered half of East Tex-
as.
Denisou loeated its first Rod and
Gun Club in Colorado because the
menibers preferred fiching and hunt-
ing to golf. Nobody objected to mak-
ing the long trek west because they
always stayed at least two weeks.
