Larry Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Elmo Meyer of Sehulenburg, Texas, won
a National Science Foundation Scholar-
ship to attend the Summer Science
Training Program, for Secondary Sehool
Students in Mathematics at ths Univer-
sity of Oklahoma at Norman, Oklahoma,
starting June 11, 1962 and lasting for
eight weeks.
Larry will také speciál mathematics
ccurs.es in Modern Matli plus Computer
training, and a course in Liberál Arts
ifrom one of the following' ehoices: Lit-
eratuře, spcech, music, and art appre-
ciation.
These scholarships are oífered to out-
standing students by various co-llege:
and universities tbroughout the coun-
try. The students are selected by their
scores on the following thr.ee tests: OlL
Mental Ability, STEP Scinece, and STEP
Mathematics, pluc Secondary Sehool
records and r e cornme n dations by teaciň-
.ers.
The above tests' provide a common
basis for comparíng students from
various schcols. Larry took these tests
in competition with both sophomores
and juiiiors tbroughout the country and
won his seholarship os a sophomore.
Larry has a straight “A” average in
scibool. Last year he was selected as the
outstanding student in the freshman
class.
Alťnough Larry lives in Sehulenburg,
he is a member of Lodge No. 17, SPJST
at Caldwell, his motihehs hometown.
Larry is the grand,son of Mr. and Mrs.

The Distriet One Spring Meeting was
neld at Lodge No. 38 Osvěta at Kovar,
Texas, Sunday, May 6th beginning at
1:30 p.m. on a beautiíul, warm and
sunny dav.
President of Distriet One, brother
Ernest Jakubik called the meeting to
.uder at 1:30 p.m. welcoming the m.em-
bership to Distriet One. He then turned
ihe meeting over to Sister Lillie Ma-
tějka, Distriet One Youth Director to
present the Youth Program.
Sister Matějka opened the Program
with a prayer recited by Ca.rol Ann Vy-
topil of the Bryo.n Lodge No. 39, follow-
ed by the Pledge of Allegiance to our
Flag by the assembly.
The seecnd nuniber was a Cornet solo,
ny Ronnie Matějka of the Bryan Lodge
No. 39.
The third numbej* was a recitation:
‘Our Flag” by David Janek of Lodge No.
3 Snook.
T, e fourth number was a Charleston
tance by Beverly Kay and Shirley Kay
Shearer of Lodge No. 38.
The Fifth, nurnber was a song: “Deep

Berrd.ee Jakubik, accompanied on the
hano by Sue Sebesta of Lodge No. 9,

Kay Shearer of Lodge No. 38.
The tenth number was. a song and

honor of Mothers day coming up with-
in a week. These who participated in
ťhis number were: Dottie Matějka, sing-
ing “Mlother” with Shirley Cech at the
piano, both of. Lodge No. 38 Bryan.
Then in the acrostic part of the fol~
lowing recited their parts of the MOTH-

Thus ended the Youth Program amid
applause from the spectators. The chil-
dren performed like old troupers.—Good
work!
Brother Vaclav Barina, President of
Lodge No. 38, welcomeď those who came
to the Distriet One Meeting. Speaking in
English brother Barina stated: “It is in-
deed, a pleasure to welcome you again
to Kovar. I say “again,” because this is
the third time I’ve had the pleasure to
do so. We realize that we at Kovar are j
j úst a smáli Community, we don’t háve
lots of hig things; there are not many
of us, but what we do háve we want to
share with you. I thing that these Dis-
trict Meetings afford a fine opportunity
for all of us in helping to get acquaint-
ed with the others better; we get along
better so we are, indeed, glad that you
háve come bacx to Kovar and wish for
everyone of you a “welcome” in otu
midst. He then repeated the same greet-
ing in the Czech Language.

Jakubik then tlianked brother Barina
for his sincere welcome of the Kovar :
Lodge, stating tha,t '“the distriet is
happy to be here.” He, too, repeated his
response to Brother Barina’s “Welcome”
in Czech. [
