San Antonio to be Next SPJST Convention City
(By S. C. Bundil)
Lodge Number 133, San Antonio, has
agreed to ask for the 1960 SPJST Con-
vention to be held in San Antonio. This ,
city has never been a site for our SPJST,
Conventions. And it is proper that one '
of the most historical cities in the statě '
should, at some time, be host to the del- ,
egates of our Society.
In the first plače, there is so much
to see as a vacation spot that a group
cf far-sighted and alert business people
háve cc.r.c to believe their own propa-
ganda “There* is no more enjoyable va-
cation spot in the world than in the
Alarno City.”
Falše assumption that a lot of dis-
tance must be covered to make an ade-
quate vacation is rapidly being exploded,
so far as San Antonio is concerned. This
group appealing to the very people who
make up the expanded trade territory
of this historie Southwest metropolis,
point out dozens of arguments to in-
duce the residents; of neighboring cities
of the wisclom of selecting San Antonio
for a full vacation.
They háve evidenece to indicate the
average resident of the San Antonio
trade area has never fully explored the
full vacation possibilities of the city.
Most people who live nearby, come rel-
ativelv frequently to San Antonio, but
few, if any, are famiiiar with all the
pointa of interest a leisurely vacation
can afford.
A suggested vacation for a resident
of a nearby city would be something
like this: The entire family can check
into a luxurious motel, for instance Vic-
tory Courts, where accomonodations are
from a single room to three bedrooms,
kitchen and bath; television, rádio, air
conditioning, and a very fine swinmiing
pool outside. Many fine hotels, too.
There would be no preliminary day of
rest before beginning the rounds, be-
cause the family would not be exhausted
from hundreds of miles of highway tra-
vel in order to arrive at the vacation
spot.
There are so many fine and pictur-
esque dining spots avallable that only
by choice would the vacationers eat in
the same plače twice during a normál
length of stay. Before even examining
the points of interest, the visitors will
find they are welcomed to parks and
playgrounds, clubs and golf courses not
surpassed anywhere. To foreak up the
usual tourist pattern at times, they can
select fine movies, frequently outstand-
Ing shows in the coliseum or city audi-
torium, baseball games featuring one of
the finest teams in the Texas League
and untold other fonns of amusement.
Orue on the tourist Circuit, although
these residents of the trade area cort-
Sider San Antonio a second horae town, ? v
they are amazed to find how much u
more there is to clu and see than they I ,
ever realized. A trip to Brackenridge
Park will include a visit to one of the
nation’s largest zoological parks. The
Chinese sunken gardens offer an exotic
Ueauty beyond comparison. j .
Four of the lovelie.st missions in the
United States, including Mission San
Jose, visited annually by thousands of
out of statě touťists, are perhaps more
intimately known by New Yorkers than
by Texas neighbors. The governor’s pal-
áce and La Villita set the Spanish at-
mosphere while visits to Randolph, Kel-
ly and Lackland Air Force bases fur-
nish modern contrast. Fort Sam HouS- :
ton is an attřaction in its own right.
The week of the Fiestai San Jacinto
which starts April 16 and ends Satur-
day, April 21, is an annual affair at-
tended by thousands of our of town,
folks. Pilgrimage to the Alamo will b»
headed by King Antonio which starts
the week of festivities ancl the Battl®
of Flowers. There will be flower showS,
band contests, crowning of the queeri,
trade parade, Battle of Flowers parade,
and, the last day, Saturday, 21, Fiesta
Flambea-u, an illuminated night parádě
of the nations. This night parade is
really something to see and especially
this year as the Czechoslovakians in thé,
city háve joined hands to enter a floafc
depicting Czechoslovakia. Do not miss
this event for sure. The above is jusfc
a few of the events for the week. ;
At La Villita different nationsi will
háve booths where they will serve theíi*
particular goodies. The Czechs will seli
'kolaces three evenings; this will help
finance the float. ,j

It is not our faults but our virtues i.
which are apt to be most dangerous to
us. We feel humbled about our faults.;.
and desire to overcome them. But our
virtues tend to make us proud and com-
placent, which leads to stagnation.
A husband reports: “My wife is un-
true to me. I háve always been as stea-
dy and faithful as the Rock of Gibral-
tar.” He may be as steady (his virtue),
but this obseures in his: mind the fact
that lie- may be as dense and duli as v
the Rock of Gibraltar. ,ý |
