SOMETHING ABOUT OUR
REST HOME IN TAYLOR
Taylor, Texas
Feb. 20, 1969
Dear Brothers and Sisters:
It has been seven months since our
20th Convention of the SPJST in Dal-
las voted favorably for a loan for fur-
ther addition to the Home, a hospital
wing, here in Taylor. Today, our dreain
has become a reality and the Hahn
Brothers. Construetion Co., of Austin
started to work on it.
This additional wing should háve
been authorized in the 19th Conven-
tion four years ago, in Waco, wrhen at
that time Bro. Troubil had nearly 40
on the waiting list. All were our mem-
bers and wished to be admitted to the
SPJST Rest Home, and at whičh time
as a delegáte, I spoke of the lack of
space here. Since that time there háve
been two homes built here in Taylor,
large enough to accommodate 100 old
people, but, as the saying goes; “Bet-
VĚSTNÍK
ter latě than never.”
The delay in starting the construc-
tion is not the fault of your directors,
for they had everythmg ready to go
two months before Christmas, however
there was a very great searcity of
builders and bidders and they had to
delay until after the New Year. The
greatest lack of space is in our hos-
pital wing, which draws on the other
two wings where it is constantly al-
most over filled by those members be-
coming sick and having to be moved
to the sick bay. In this wing are all of
the necessities at hand, such as:
sheets, pillows, towels, a lifter for
bathing the bedridden; all necessary
medicines kept in a locked cabinet and
kept there to be ušed as our doctor
advises. In this wing there are nine
nurses who are here three on a shift,
eight hours per shift, day and night.
The kind of care we are receiving
here is probably better than in the
best and most modern of hospitals
where the charges amount to probably
over $100 a day. I had my own experi-
ence in that with my wife, who was
sick for many years and finally stayed
in this Home and also passed away
h£re.
Today, our SPJST with Benevolence,
Humanity and Brotherhood as its mot-
toes can be proud that it supports
these types of undertakings where our
elderly and sick members can come to
spend their last days with their
troubles under the auspices of our So-
ciety, and with friends. When this
hospital wing will be ready (in about
three months, weather being about
normál), we will need furnishings in
these rooms, which we do not háve at
the present time. We will háve to bor-
row from the Supreme Lodge, or de-
pend on dear gifts from our brother-
hood membership, lodges and districts,
the way it was doně 12 years ago.
It was three years ago that I moved
here from Dallas with my wife, and
we were moved into Room 6 in the
hospital wing where on the dooř was
a plaque with gold letters which read:
“This room furnished by Lodge Praha
No. 29.” When my wife left me, I
was moved into the men’s section,
Room 8, and there on the dooř was:
“Furnished by Brother and Sister J. F.
Chupick” I lived in that room two
years and each time I ěntered it
(sometim.es ten times a day) the name
was looking straight into my eyes, a
name I will never forget! Now I am in
Room 7 where my neighbor ušed to
Wednesday, March 5, 1989
live and was a good friend of mine.
His name was Walter Kolínek and we
loved each other and really understood
each other. We lived next to each
other two years, when he suddenly had
a stroke and was taken to Taylor to a
hospital. After some time he wanted
to return to our Home here, but ther
was no room in the hospital wing. At
the wishes and requests of his chil-
dren, our manager, Brother Gaida,
made some arrangements and room
for him with a bed on the sun porch,
enclosed at the end of the hospital
wing where our nurses watched over
him day and night. In two weeks he
passed away, and I miss this faithful
and true friend to this day.
Every one of the rooms in our
SPJST Rest Home has someone for
a sponsor, and that is why I am writing
this letter to you sisters and brothers
so that you will not allow this chance
to leave a life-long memoriál to your
loved ones in this new wing. We will
háve about 14 rooms to accommodate
18 patients. First-class furnishings for
one room for one patient will cost
$376.15 and twice that amount for two
patients.
Fraternally yours,
Hugo Shefcak, Sr.,
