Fatal crash sends three to ER
Kemp ISD para-professional dies at scene
By Pearl Cantrell

KEMP-An employee
at the Kemp Primary who
worked with the Gifted &
Talented program, English
as a Second Language and
a Special-Ed aide lost her
life in a traffic collision Fri-
day, Nov. 22.
Texas Highway Patrol
Troopers were call ed to the
crash on U.S. Highway
175 at the 634-mile
marker in Kemp at around
8:30 p.m. Rain-soaked
roadways were the condi-
tions.
According to the traffic
report, Joal Smith, 56 of
Kemp, was traveling east
on U.S. 175 in a 2004
Ford Taurus. Humberto
Rivera, 22, of Malakoff
was traveling west on the
same highway in a 2005
Honda Civic with two pas-
sengers.
For an as yet undeter-
mined reason, “Smith
turned north into a cross-
over and pulled into the
path of the Honda Civic,”
a Department of Public
Safety press release
stated.
Smith died at the crash
scene. The occupants of
the Honda Civic were
transported to East Texas
Medical Center in Gun
Barrel City with serious
injuries.
The passengers included
Katia Rosales, 16, of Ath-
ens and Sergio Hernandez,
18, of Mabank. On Mon-
day, ETMC reported all
three as having been
treated and released.

Friday fire guts
Hippie Hut
By Pearl Cantrell

MABANK-In the tra-
dition of “bad news trav-
els fast,” by Saturday
morning it seemed every-
one was talking about the
Friday night fire that gut-
ted the Hippie Hut in Ma-
bank.
Owner Leann
Chamness told The Moni-
tor that she received a call
at around 11:45 p.m. Fri-
day informing her of the
fire.
The restaurant had
closed at 10 p.m. and all
was well.
On Monday morning,
the cause of the fire was
still unknown, with an in-
surance adjuster expected
on site on Tuesday.
Depending on the out-
come with the insurance,
Chamness said she
planned to rebuild.
Some have reported on
Facebook, seeing a red
pickup truck pulling out of
the parking lot after clos-
ing. Police had put up
crime scene tape all
around the property right
after the fire was extin-
guished.
Mabank Police Chief
Kyle McAfee reports the
fire department was toned
out at 11:23 p.m. and fire
departments from Kemp
and Gun Barrel City as-
sisted in quenching the
flames. An investigation
was still underway Mon-
day to determine the cause
and origin of the blaze.

vided not only another cu-

CEDAR CREEK
LAKE-Sheriffs deputies
are conducting an investi-
gation following the un-
earthing of human remains
at a property on the north
side of U.S. 175 between
Mabank and Eustace
Nov. 20.
Henderson County
Sheriff Ray Nutt told The
Monitor that the skeletal
remains will be sent to The
Center for Human
Identification's Laboratory
of F orensic Anthropology
at the University of North
Texas for analysis and
identification.
Last year, investigators
received information that
lead them to believe that
the remains of man who
had been missing for ayear
might be found on the
property. However, after
an exhaustive search, their
findings were inconclusive.
Recently, a new owner
of the property started
clearing and moving dirt,
when he came upon what
he suspected were human
remains and called the
sheriffs office to investi-
gate.
The missing person has
not been seen for two years
now, Nutt said. “We won’t

On Friday, investigators from the Henderson County Sheriff's Office and District Attorney sift through dirt (above) for bone fragments
from human remains uncovered on property fronting the north side of U.S Highway 175 between Mabank and Eustace (below). Officials
suspect foul play connected with a man reported to have lived on the property who has not been seen for two years.
