Cove sweeps Harker Heights in opening meet
Copperas Cove’s Lady
Dawgs served notice they are
the lone favorite to win a dis-
trict title with a surprising 14-
3 victory over the Harker
Heights Lady Knights in the
season opener for both teams.
Cove took a narrow 4-3 lead
after match play behind Dako-
ta Stutz, Robin Daugherty and
Jessica Reed. From there it
was all Lady Dawgs as they
swept the four-team games.
Maya Dixon-Dates averaged
200 to lead the Lady Knights.
The Cove boys made it a
sweep with an 11-6 victory
over the defending champions
Knights. James Norris,
Robert Bigford and Nate But-
ler helped the Dawgs to a 5-2
lead after match play before
helping win the first two team
games to seal the victory.
Justin Rogers led Heights in
scoring.
Shoemaker’s Lady Grey
Wolves pitched a shutout
against the Memorial Chris-
tian Warriors Tuesday at Hall-
mark Lanes in the season open-
er for both teams. Kayla Henry
and Cathesia Foster led Shoe-
maker in scoring while Julia
Castaneda topped the Lady
Warriors. Tommy Flores led
the Shoemaker boys to an open-
ing victory, 16-1 over Memori-
al. Luke Morris took the lone
point for the Warriors.
The Ellison Eagles showed
why they are a favorite to win a
district title Monday at Hall-
mark Lanes by shutting out the
Killeen Kangaroos 17-0.
Chance Capania (212), Derek
Brooks (208) and Jordan Garza
(200) led the Eagles in match
play before helping the team av-
erage 217 during the team
games. Gaylon Brown led the
Roos in scoring.

Dawgs land 20 on
All District team
The coaches of District 8-5A
have released their 2012 all dis-
trict team selections with Cop-
peras Cove landing 20 on the list.
"We're very proud of our all
district selections," Bulldawg
head coach Jack Welch said.
"Like any year, you always wish
that some of your kids would get
higher accolades for what they do,
but overall, as a team and as a pro-
gram, we were well represented.”
On the first-team offense,
senior Rashaun Gibson made it at
wide receiver and returner, while
Justin Greene, another senior, is
the first-team center. Greene also
nabbed a first-team deep snapper
pick. Senior Les Sakaria joined
Greene on the first-team offensive
line and senior fullback Chans
Colbert also made the first team.
The first-team defense in-
cluded unanimous pick Billy Hat-
ten, a senior, at tackle and inside
linebacker Darius McClinton, al-
so a senior.
Second team picks included
senior Israel Hamm on the offen-
sive line, while second-team de-
fensive nods went to seniors Dar-
ian Childers at defensive tackle,
outside linebacker Karim Sarhani
and safety DeMarkos White.
Honorable Mention picks on
offense went to seniors Robbie
Seybold at quarterback, tight end
Girod Fluelen, along with line-
men Tyler Agnello and Blake
Hohnes. Junior Vondareaz King
was honorable mention running
back and Hunter McVey, a junior,
is the honorable mention utility
player.
On defense, Bulldawgs get-
ting Honorable Mention were
seniors Colby Guillory at end,
linebackers Julian Doubleday and
Zach Martin, as well as defensive
backs Kincey English and Fabian
Valenzuela. Sophomore Tyrell
Thompson made the list at defen-
sive end and Phil Amua, another
sophomore, was on the list at de-
fensive tackle.
"I think we had the second
most all district picks and that
kind of goes with the territory, we
were the runnemp district cham-
pion,” said Welch. “Midway had
the most and they were the num-
ber one team, but overall, we were
very well represented and we're
very proud of our players."
The 2012 Copperas Cove
High School Football Banquet
will be held Monday, Dec. 17 at
the Copperas Cove Civic Center.

they've found their seat. Clem
Mikeska BBQ will provide the

ipation. At the varsity level, play-
ers will be recognized that are

trict team along with any All-Dis-
trict 8-5A player honors; the Su-
perintendents award, defensive
scout team, Dawg bite award for
offense and defense players, new-
comer of the year for offense and
defense, most improved for both
offense and defense, Iron Dawg
along with the MVP for offense
and defense.

trict as a wide reciever out of District 8-5A. Gibson ended the
season with 53 receptions for 834 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Longhorns cheer
alongside Aggies
Picture this

First and foremost let me
state that I bleed burnt orange.
Maybe it was all the summers I
spent on the campus of the
University of Texas in Austin,
or the family gatherings after
our annual Thanksgiving meal
to watch the Longhorns play,
dare I mention the Aggies that
turned the color of my blood.
All of my family clad in
burnt orange and white sport-
ing the Bevo logo proudly
cheered along the Longhorns,
however there were a few out-
sider siblings who will remain
nameless (Charlene and Becky)
who would get their shots in as
the OTHER university in Texas
would score or make a play.
With the College Station
team making the move to the
SEC in the spring, the annual
rivalry between the Longhorns
and the Aggies dissolved. I
must apologize because at the
start of the season I gave the
Aggies a slim chance of win-
ning two games in the new
SEC and thought they would
be lucky to not finish last in a
conference that is home to dev-
astating defensive units.
I began to give the Aggies
a little more credit after their
first game of the season as they
fell to the Florida Gators in
their SEC opener at home. I
remember a call to my cousin
prior to the week two matchup.
“They will be lucky to score a
field goal,” I taunted. I was
surprised to watch them fall by
a field goal.
Win after Win I found my-
self rooting for the Aggies and
making excuses to follow them
“They aren’t in the Big XII
anymore so its O.K. to root for
them in the SEC,” or “They
won’t be facing your Long-
horns so its O.K. to pull for
them,” are just a few of the
phrases I would use to dull the
pain of cheering for the arch-
nemesis of the Longhorns.
Before I knew it they had
ripped off a 7-2 record, drop-
ping their games to Florida and
LSU, and facing the No. 1 Ala-
bama Crimson Tide. Behind
the Longhorns my next favorite
college football team is the one
facing the Crimson Tide.
To me the Tide are like the
Yankees or the Lakers. The
team you love to hate because
they are so good.
As the season progressed a
superhero emerged for the Ag-
gies, this super hero wasn’t
draped in a cape, however he

NEW YORK — Heisman
Trophy history suggests it will
never get better for Johnny
Manziel than it did this sea-
son. In the 78-year history of
the Heisman, only one player
has won more than one: Ohio
State's Archie Griffin in 1974
and '75.
But even if another Heis-
man is not in Manziel's future,
there's still plenty left for
Johnny Football and Texas
A&M to achieve before he's
done in College Station,
Texas.
"First and foremost,
there's the Cotton Bowl,"
Manziel said Saturday night.
The lOth-ranked Aggies play
No. 12 Oklahoma in Dallas on
Jan. 4.
"From there, I have to be
the guy who starts the motor
for a run at the national title
next year. That's our goal. If
more awards come, they
come."
That goal doesn't seem
farfetched at all after the Ag-
gies' scintillating first season
playing in the Southeastern
Conference. Manziel was
joined on stage at his post-
ceremony news conference by
coach Kevin Sumlin and
A&M offensive coordinator
Kliff Kingsbury, the former
star quarterback at Texas
Tech.
Manziel turned 20 this
week. Kingsbury is 33. Sum-
lin is 48. It's not hard to look
at them and see the future of
the SEC. Especially after the
Aggies went 10-2 this season
and left no doubt that their
fast-paced, spread offense
would not sputter in the big
bad SEC.
Texas A&M averaged 552
yards per game and 44 points.
Manziel smashed Cam New-
ton's total offense record with
4,600 yards passing and rush-
ing.
"You look what our of-
fense did this year. People
didn't really think that we
were going to have much suc-
cess in the SEC. They said
these smashmouth, hard-nose
defenses and this gimmick of-
