Shawnte’ Goff went into
Copperas Cove’s road
matchup with Belton on Fri-
day night at Tiger Gym as one
of the most prolific scorers in
District 8-5A.
It sure didn’t take long for
her to twist up the Tigers.
Copperas Cove survived
an early scoring drought and
came back to defeat Belton
57-45. The win lifts Cove to
15-4 overall and 4-0 in district
play.
Kinsey Williams and Ke-
sha Butler lifted the Lady
Tigers to a quick 4-0 lead just
two minutes in. The Lady
Dawgs hit the score sheet on a
field goal Bryaunea Hall. An-
gel Mullin pegged a three-
pointer and Mikayla Blount
hit a field goal to put Cove 7-
4 with 3:26 remaining in the
first quarter. The Lady Tigers
went on a 7-1 streak over the
next three minutes, as
Williams, Emily Hugo,
and McKinzie Robinson
all tallied for Belton. Brit-
tany Gamble hit a basket
with six seconds to play in
the first half to interrupt
the run, as the Lady Tigers
took an 11-10 lead into the
second quarter.
“We knew that Belton
would come at us hard,” Goff
said. “We slacked off and they
kept coming at us we had to
regroup.”

as a

field goal gave the Lady
Dawgs their second lead of
the night at 13-11. The Lady
Tigers did not hit a field goal
for a stretch of 4:47 that
bridged between quarters, but
Cove was only able to put up
five points in the span. Down
16-12, Hugo scored seven of
the Lady Tigers next 12 points
to draw them to with two
point of Cove. But Stephanie
Cochran interrupt another
Belton attempt at a tie with a
field goal and free throw to
give Cove the advantage at
the half 27-24.
“I felt we were a little
tentative in the first half,” said
Cove coach Teresa Durham.
“I figured with all the stress
they have had with exams
they would come out slow.
And they did. We were a little
off kilter, but they played
through it.”
Hugo hit the first
two shots of the sec-
ond half for Belton to
regain a 29-27 lead. Then
the Cove combination of
Goff, Mullin, Cochran and
Hall engineered an 18-3
run spanning six min-
utes. Goff poured in six
of her team high 17
points in the third quar-
ter and Cove went into
the fourth quarter with
a 13 point lead, 45-32.
“When we went
to the locker room,
we had to mentality
regroup,” said Goff.
“We knew what we
had to do and went
out and did it.”
After Kesha
Butler hit Bel-
ton’s first bas-
ket of the
fourth quar-
ter, Goff
and Jasmin Johnson combined
to give Cove its biggest lead
at 50-34 with 7:16 to
play. The Lady Tigers
and Lady Dawgs trad-
ed baskets back and
forth during the quarter,
but the physicality of the
game wore both teams
down at the end.
Aside from Goff’s 17-
point effort, Johnson had
nine points and Mullin had
eight for the Lady Dawgs.
Belton received 16 points
from Hugo and six points
from Williams.

kids over there,” said

ovc drops game 2 of doubleheader to Belton

Copperas Cove made the road trip to Bel-
ton Friday night full well knowing that it was
going to be a dogfight from start to finish.
Thanks to Cove’s resiliency, it ended up
being an exciting game.
The Bulldawgs survived an early 17-point
deficit and rallied to take the Belton Tigers to
overtime, and then fall to the Tigers 72-66 at
Tiger Gym.
The Tigers jumped on Cove from the tip
off. Braden Hammond and Coby Potvin led a
charge that put Belton on top 14-0 three min-
utes in. Montrae Williams and Rashard
Odomes got the Bulldogs on the board in con-
secutive possessions. Daniel Mills would trade
baskets with Odomes and then Tyler Wilson.
Cove trailed after the first quarter 24-13.
“Belton came out on fire,” said Cove
coach Billy White. “They went on that 14-0
run and the score was at 19-4. They were hit-
ting. We were missing. We needed to regroup
and focus.”
The Bulldogs whittled away at the Tigers
lead, reducing the lead to a two-point lead with
2:21. Williams, Odomes, Deion Robinson, Ja-
cob Peart, and Rashaun Gibson all contributed
in the reduction of the Belton lead. After trad-
ing free throws, a Thomas Barnes field goal
gave the Tigers a 34-30 lead at halftime.
After Mills and Hammond extended Bel-
ton’s lead back to ten points with 5:18 remain-
ing in the third quarter, Cory Scott touched up
the Tigers for 10 of Cove’s 18 third quarter
points. Scott’s hot hand sent Cove on a 16-6
run to even the game up 48-48 at the end of the
third stanza.
The fourth quarter see sawed back and
forth. Mills and Hammond would trade baskets
with Scott and Odomes to even the score at 52-
52. However, a personal foul and technical
foul on Cove’s Cedric Carlisle resulted in
Mills hitting four consecutive free throws and
