dance time. The kitchen and bar will
be open at that time so you may eat a
hamburger instead of cooking at home.

Lodge 80, Holland
readying for May 18
picnic, auction
and free dance
íťs that time of year again — time
for the SPJST Lodge 80, Holland
annual picnic. Pian to be at the lodge
halí on Sunday,'May 18 to enjoy the
barbecue dinner, auction, bake sále,
plant sále and games for the entire
family. SPJST Lodge 80, Holland is
located two-and-a-half miles south of
Holland, just off FM 2268.
Barbecue to go off the pit begins at
10 a.m. The serving of pláte s starts at
11 a.m. and will contiue until sold out.
Plates include barbecue pork, sausage,
buttered potatoes, green beans, cole
slaw, pickles, bread and tea. Plates are
$6 at the dooř and $5 in advance.
The auction begins at 2 p.m., fol-
lowed by a free dance from 4 to 8
p.m. with music by Fritz Hodde and
the Fabulous Six.

Lodge 80, Holland
reports on
Apríl meeting
Dear Members and Friends,
Vice President Frank Pajestka, Jr.
called the meeting to order of SPJST
Lodge 80, Holland on Apríl 5, 2003 at
4 p.m. The membership stood for the
Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of
silence for departed members. All
offícers were present except President
Harold Rohde who is in a Temple hos-
pital.
Secretary Linda Hill read the min-
utes of the March meeting. They
were approved as read. Several thank
you notes were read. Glen Latham
moved to give $250 to the ARC
Speciál Olympics in Temple and sec-
onded by Estelle Coker. Motion car-
ried. Brother Glen then read a letter
from Judy Gotcher pertaining to the
American Cancer Society’s Relay for
Life in Temple. He made a motion to
give $250 and seconded by Estelle
Coker. Motion carried. He read a let-
ter from Sandra Jones asking for sup-
port for Holland Project Celebration
for the purpose of providing a safe
chemical-free environment at speciál
events for junior and senior high stu-
dents of Holland ISD. Ricky Benner
moved to give $50. The motion was
seconded by Tony Sladecek. Motion
carried. Brother Glen gave reports of
all committees, and they were fme.
Eight new members were voted
into membership of the lodge.
Under unfmished business, Frankie
mentioned that the bathrooms need to
be redone.
Under new business, Brother Glen
reported he had gone before the
Holland School Board requesting the
board do away with school taxes for
Lodge 80. The Holland School Board
agreed to exempt taxes for Lodge 80
for five years, since Lodge 80 has
aíways been generous in allowing
school functions at the halí and help-
ing íocal students as well,
Exemptions are to be reviewed every
five years.
Frankie reminded members of the
annual picnic in May. He also report-
ed on the Lifetime Achiever awards
given to our members. Those receiv-
ing awards were G.L. Brisbin, Tony
Sladecek, Curtis and Jewel Wolf, and
Glenda Liles. Thanks for all your
hard work!
On the ailing list was President
Harold Rohde. You are in our prayers.

Barbara Taisler was the only person
present having a birthday this month.
Winners in the drawing were Billie
Latham, Calvin Eckermann, Glen
Latham, Florine Rohde, and Jason
Schlickeisen.
Frankie then asked for a motion to
let the Holland Youth Boosters use the
halí at a time to be set. Rick Benner
so moved, the motion was seconded,
and it passed.

activities
Lodge 88, Houston member, Paul
Beck, who is very active with the
Salvation Army Women and
Children’s Center was awarded a
medal as “Volunteer of the Year.”
This honor was given to him at a
Volunteer Appreciation Dinner held at
Lodge 88 on February 26, 2003. The
lodge donated the use of the halí for
this event. Paufs volunteer activities
include going to the center one after-
noon each week and reading to the
children; also, helping to serve food
on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Paul
is a great volunteer at the lodge, too.
At our speciál celebrations, he is
always in the kitchen doing all he can
to help.
Alan Beck, a nephew o.f Paul Beck,
is a member of the Appalachian
Mountain Club. He has taken a six-
month leave of absence from his
employer to hike the full length of the
Appalachian Trail which stretches
from Georgia to Maine — a distance
of 2100 miles. He started his trek on
Apríl 1 which was his birthday as well
as Apríl Foofs Day.
Recently, I had the opportunity to
háve a nice long visit with Naomi
(Kostom) Spencer, a lady who I
admire so much. She has worked for
our lodge for many years and is so
young at heart. She sets a goód exam-
ple for everyone in our fraternal orga-
nization.
Our travelers, Jeanette and E.J.
Bender, took a 12-day cruise in
February. They made stops in
Cozumel, Mexico, Grand Cayman,
Panama, Costa Rica, and Jamaica,
When traveling through the Panama
Canal, the ship had only a two-foot
clearance on each side for passage.
After passing through the Gatun
Locks, they took a train ride to the
Pacific Oceán, visited Panama City
and saw the Bridge Over the
Americas. They went to the Dole
Banana Píantation in Costa Rica and
were amazed that from planting, har-
vesting and packaging the bananas,
the fruit are never touched by machin-
ery. Everything is doně by hand. In
Jamaica, they saw a 400-year old
