How Much More Can We Afford?
Stock Company?
I háve been hearing talk now for two
cpnventions that íhere are those who wish
to make the SPJST a stock company. I
would like to inform you of what could
happen if we lose our fraternal status.
Delegates and members neeb ío think
about the differences and know how the
change to a stock company could change
the SPJST right down to the local lodges.
I háve researched this through various
insurance companies, a prior fraternal
organization, and a CPA.
Should we change ío a stock company,
we as members would no longer háve '
any rights to voice our opinions regarding
the company. There will be no cofiveo-
tions and we would lose our right to
vote, We will lose our oon-profií fra-
ternal status because a stock company
wants to make money. Losing our frater-
nal status would cause each individual
lodge to siand on their own financially.
No more rebates from the Home
Office, which we know a lot of lodges
count on this for financial support. No
more funding of any of our fraternal
projects like camp, YAD, meetings, tour-
naments and other activities. All the
money would stay in the stock company
as profit and the insurance
company/department would use it to fund
their business expenses, awards, speciál
trips, and cars.
Currently non-profit fraternal compa-
nies can seli insurance without a State
Insurance License. In a stock company,
all sales representatives will háve to go
through the íicensing process, pass the
statě exam and then keep up a continuing
education program of 30 hours of classes
every two years. The insurance classes
are expensive, which will not be compa-
ny-paid, and háve to be taught by a statě
approved instructor. Don’t forget that
each insurance representative will háve a
quota and if you don’t make your
assigned number of sales, you are .out, no
longer a sales representative. I know this
to be true as I hold the same insurance
license in order to seli medical, dental and
disability insurance. Also, fraternal
encouragement through the local lodges
for insurance sales for membership will
no longer exist. No insurance necessary
for memberships, no rebates, no lodges.
Think about it.
Most individuals are not concerned
about this change, but the local lodges
will be the ones to suffer along with the
membership. Home Office and employ-
ees will not be hurt, in fact they will gain.
Again, the lodges of the SPJST will
háve to support themselves so how
many do you think will stay in business?
I see the changes like the proposed
change in the officers, switching the
President and Vice President, making one
a CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and
reclassifying their duties makes me real-
ize that certain individuals are trying to
lay a foundation to convert to a stock
company. Getting rid of the rest homes
has come up. This is another of our bene-
fits being taken away. All of a sudden we
are looking to get rid of the fraternal
activities because they are expensive.
These activities are what keeps us on the
right track with the government and
according to the financial statement, they
are very smáli expenses compared to
what they do for us tax wise.
Leťs look at cutting expenses where
large amounts are being spent. Why do
we háve 11 cars at the Home Office
valued at over $175,000.00? Wonder
how much we pay in insurance? Why do
the District Sales Representatives need a
car? They spend their time selling instead
of devoting their time helping the other
sales representatives in their districts.
They are often recognized for being tops
in. their district, are paid commission plus
a pay check and also háve a company car.
In the last Convention proceedings
book, it was suggested by the Finance
Committee that the Home Office háve
no more than five vehicles. What has
happened here? Most insurance compa-
nies do not give their insurance agents
(field representatives) a car and pay their
auto insurance. Agents use their own
vehicles and deduct their mileage as a
business expense on their personál
income tax. We better be looking for
ways to keep our fraternal status and cut
some of the “perks” that those close to the
Home Office are getting.
There is also talk of having the editor
of the Vestnik a hired employee. Who
will hire him and who will he answer to?
Right now he is elected by the member-
ship and he is responsible to the member-
ship. Leťs keep our Vestnik printing the
facts, recording our fraternal activities
and be a newspaper for the membership.
This íetter is intended to keep you
informed of facts and educated on the
effects of some of the changes proposed.
Leťs keep our fraternal status, our local
lodges, and our brotherhood. We need
our organization more and more each day
as a “speciál haven” from today’s world.
Fraternal ly,
Dorothy Pflughaupt
