The weekend of April 11 and 12
proved to be rather eventful for Cen-
tral Texas, especially to the citizens of
Czech-Moravian descent living in the
area.

Czechoslovak Prime Minister Marián
Čalfa and an entourage of five offi-
cials arrived in New York early in the
week where he visited contacts in New
York, visited President George Bush in
Washington, D.C., and then went to
Pennsylvania from where he departed
to arrive at Dallas, Texas Saturday,
April 11 where he was hosted by City
of Dallas officials and also greeted by
Czech Educational Foundation of
Texas (CEFT) and SPJST members as
well as others. The visitors spent the
night with families in Dallas and Sun-
day morning, CEFT President Cyrill
"Sid" Pokladník, his wife Justine and
son, Johnnie, also CEFT Vice Chair-
man of the Board Calvin Chervenka
and his wife Mildred escorted the
group to Ennis for a quick visit to the
City of Ennis and the four Czech fra-
ternal halls in the area, and then on to
West arriving approximately 12:00
noon for a delicious Texas style barbe-
cue dinner plus homemade kolache
hosted by Brother David and Sister
Rebecca Kolár in their beautiful, spa-
cious home, The noon meal was en-
joyed by everyone and then a hurried
trip for a one-hour reception and visit
at Lone Star Halí (the home of SPJST
Jaromir Lodge No. 54 and West Sokol
Gymnastic Association).
The party was greeted at the halí by
City of West officials as well as others
representing Czech organizations.
Brother David Kolár welcomed them
with brief statements in English and
Czech and introduced the group to ap-
proximately 75 West area citizens.
Prime Minister Čalfa addressed the
attendees in a brief address thanking
everyone they had met thus far in
Texas for their hospitality, expressed
his pleasure that so many still were re-
taining their Czech heritage, customs
and language, was also surprised that
so many still do. He encouraged all
present to visit Czechoslovakia and
hoped they would so that they would
receive the hospitality of his country
in return. In his address, he stated that
times were rather hard in Czechoslova-
kia at the present time, especially eco-
nomically, but that with the
resourcefulness and perseverance of
the Czech people they could overcome
the present and they look for a bright
future.
The West Czech Folk Dancers enter-
tained Prime Minister Calfa and his
group with a Texas-Czech dance num-
ber in their costumes; they seemed to
enjoy the dancers’ performance.
Time was indeed fleeting, however,
he took time to shake hands and chat
briefly with many of those in atten-
dance, also spent a few minutes an-
swering questions of television, rádio
and newspaper reporters. He ended his
visit with a brief look at the modern
Sokol Gym (next dooř to Lone Star
Halí), and hurriedly left (with Texas
bluebonnets and other souvenirs) es-
corted by Texas Highway Patrol and
Secret Service for a trip to Temple and
the SPJST Headquarters for a two-hour
reception by officials of City of Tem-
ple, CEFT, SPJST, RVOS, and other
Czech fraternal organizations from
where he departed at 5:00 p.m. to Aus-
tin and University of Texas, where he
was scheduled to make an address and
later depart for DFW Airport.
Prime Minister Čalfa had been in-
vited by CEFT Chairman of the Board
Roger Kolár of Austin eariier to attend
the dedication of the Endowment of
the Czech Chair, however, his duties
of his office prevented him from doing
so at that time and, he stated in West,
that he took care of his official duties
eariier in the week in New York,
Washington and Pennsylvania and de-
cided to make a weekend visit to
Texas and, in that way, fulfill his pre-
vious promise to Czech Educational
Foundation of Texas officials at this
time. Thus far, he was thoroughly en-
joying his "Texas Weekend."
This was indeed something speciál
for our Czech organizations, because
officials of the Czechoslovak govern-
ment from the Capitol City of Prague
do not háve the opportunity to visit us
very often.
Your editor understands that the
friendly atmosphere of both the visi-
tors and the hosting groups prevailed
everywhere and hopes that all con-
cerned were pleased with the Prime
Ministeťs visit everywhere and that
the party had a very safe return home
and will remember their visit with us
in the future the same as we shall re-
member their visit here.
Our appreciation to aíl who helped in
making the Prime Minister and his
party feel at home everywhere they
went and our thanks especially to the
television, rádio and newspaper crews
who took the time out on this brief
visit to cover the visit of the Prime
Minister at his various stops. We ap-
preciate their coverage of his visit.
Tuesday, April 14 we attended the
second quarterly Supreme Lodge meet-
ing at the Home Office. We arrived at
1:30 p.m. and visited with State Field
Manager Gene McBride and State
Field Representative Keith Gatewood
for a short while and then attended the
Supreme Lodge meeting until recessed
for the day.
We will not go into full detail of
what was discussed; SL Secretary-
Treasurer Leonard Mikeska’s minutes
will, as usual, give details of what
transpired Tuesday afternoon plus the
entire meeting.
Needless to say, there are many
things to be discussed at these quar-
terly meetings, some that can be taken
care of rather quickly, and some that
také more discussion than others.
Surely, everyone visiting the Supreme
Lodge meeting would háve their own
opinion, and more than likely, no two
opinions would be alike, human nátuře
being what it is.
At one meeting in the past, the Board .
had asked your editor about the possi-
bility of having a Věstník published
twice a month instead of weekly. The
editor promised to give this some seri-
ous thought and brought it up in the re-
cent Publication Committee meeting
which, of course, has control of the
Věstník publication. The committee
members felt that, since we are com-
piling 20-page instead of 16-page is-
sues frequently now, that they saw no
possibility of condensing the materiál
being published now into only two is-
sues a month. That is what this writer
reported to the Supreme Lodge Board
at the meeting, because, very likely
there will be quite a few more 20-page
issues needed prior to the convention
because of the arnount of materiál
being submitted for publication. Some
of these questions are difficulí to be
answered in a very simple way.
