Meeting
Dear Members and Friends:
The mercury was hovering around
the 95 - degree mark for several days,
but Friday, Saturday and Sunday it
went up to 100 - 101 and Sunday 102
degrees and it looks like we will háve
more of the sarne for the next several
days according to the weather
foreeasters. As long as iťs in the 80s
iťs not so bad, but when it goes into
those 90s, iťs too hot!
1 was thinking how we people stood
up to this type of weather in what they
called the “good old days.” I
remember picking cotton in that hot
sun dragging that sack to put the
cotton in with a straw hat on my head;
if it got to burning through that hat,
we would půli a few cotton leaves and
put them in the hat and that would
help some.
The girls or ladies would háve big
bonnets made of heavy cotton
materiál. The top part of the bonnet
was made double of this materiál and
they would sew it from the front to the
back of this bonnet , a space about 1 Vz
inches wide was left between the
sewings. The next thing for this bonnet
was to make some slats (reál thin)
made out of cedarwood and they
would be inserted in the top of the
bonnets and this would keep their head
cool. They say those were the good old
days.
Our July meeting was held Sunday,
June 29th instead of the first Sunday,
July 6th. President Bohac called the
meeting to order at 2 p.m.
Roli call of offícers revealed that all
were present except Secretary Latham
who was absent.
Glenda Liles, our financial
secretary, read the minutes of the June
meeting. They were accepted as read.
In correspondence was a letter from
the Bartlett Chám ber of Commerce
asking our lodge to pařticipate in their
parade in October.
Two new members were accepted to
our lodge at this meeting; they are
Lynn and Pat Stroud.
The charter bus to the Czech Dav at
the State Fair was discussed. More on
this at our next meeting.
As there was no further business to
be discussed, the meeting adjourned to
meetagain on the first Sunday , August
3rd.
Dooř prize winners were Jerry
Massar, Otto Horelica, Tina Benner,
Frankie Pajestka and Darwin Ivicic.
I am writing this letter on Monday,
July 21st and Wednesday, July 23rd I
will be entering King’s Daughters
Hospital to háve major surgery on
Thursday, July 24th. I am hoping
everything turns out OK.

Lodge Pokrok No.
88,Houston To
Present Czech Players
The Hlahol Drama Club of Lodge
Pokrok No. 88, Houston, Texas, plans
to present a 3 - act comedy in the
Czech language on Sunday, September
14, 1986 entitled “Kos To Zaridi (Kos
will arrange it).
As far as we know we are the only
SPJST lodge to present a play in the
Czech language. it is our desire to
present a good and entertaining play
foryour enjoyment. It is also our way
of helping preserve the use of the
Czech language in Texas. We had
hoped to present the play earlier this
year, but prior personál commitments
and vacation plans would not permit
it.
Our cast was brought together by
our able director Marie Kostomlatsky,
with help from the very resourceful
Ted LaPesh. Our casts consists of six
veterán actors - Marie Kostomlatsky,
Věra Cotrino, Helen Kubicek, Jan
Schroif, Gene Barcak and Ted
LaPesh; and three new - comers to the
Czech stage - Joyce Bohuslav, Jerry
Persan and Bili Malina.
We háve a lot of fun at our practice
sessions. At times some of the lineš are
not said the way they should be and the
whole cast breaks out in laughter, at
other times we skip a few lineš or ad -
lib and confuse everyone on stage
including our very fine prompter
Svatka Link. There are also times
when the mind sits down when we get
on stage and nothing seems to go right
so we simply start over and try again.
By curtain time on September 14th we
will háve the “bugs” worked out and
we will present what we hope will be a
very enjoyable play.
Our thanks go out to our volunteer
stage manager, Tim Kostom, who
always see to it that the stage is in good
shape for our practices.
We urge all those of you who are
interested in seeing this p!ay to watch
for further details in beth the Czech
and English sections of the Věstník.
We hope to see you in the audience
watching us on September 14th.
W.J. “Bili” Malina,
