his culture. Culture is the totality of
sociaUy-transmitfced behavíor pat-
terns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and
all other products of human work
and thought charaeteristics of a
community oř population.”
He contrasted the humanities
with “pure” arts, in terms of skills,
and 4‘pure” Sciences which are not
primarily concerned with human
values and therefore normally are
not considerěd humanities.
“Since the coneept of history can
include the development and
changes in the culture of groups,
then one might consider history to
be the most basic humanity”, Mac-
hann said,
Although there is much current
interest in the family history aspect
of genealogy, it will be the task of
the humanities scholars to draw
attention to the themes and issues
which are broader in scope.
Some of these themes and issues
relate to language, folklóre, tradi-
tions, religion, organizations, traits,
values, assimilation, and the future
of Czechs in Texas and elsewhere in
the Americas.
This symposium was inspired by
the 1978 symposium “Czechs in
Texas”. That project also was
funded by the TCH-NEH and “gen-
erated an interest which is still alive
in the Texas Czeeh community
today,” Machann said.
Ace Chlápek of Temple is the
Chairman of the Arrangements
Committee for the Second Czeeh
Symposium. Persons desiring more
information concerning the
symposium should write to Mr.
Chlápek at 104 West Killen Lané,
Temple, Texas 76501.

Treasurer
Second Czeeh Symposium
