Editor’s Notě
A little bit
of history
Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday,”
starts on February 8 this year, the day
before Ash Wednesday, the start of the
Lenten season. The “Gras” or “fat”
refers to the feasting before the leaner
days of Lent. Some historians trace
the celebration back to the ancient
Romans, who held wild parties to her-
ald the coming of spring. But most
credit French immigrants who settled
in New Orleans and brought with
them their 16th century tradition of
masked balls and parties. When the
Spaniards took over the city, they out-
lawed these festivities, which were
reinstated in the early 1800s after the
United States took control. In the
mid-1800s, a group of New
Orleanians formed the Mystick
Krewe of Comus to organize future
Mardi Gras parades and parties.
Today, nearly 1.4 million people
visit New Orleans for Mardi Gras.
According to the University of New
Orleans, the city benefits to the tuně
of $840 million during the feast sea-
son.

in mid- January.
Thanks, District Three
Thanks to the members of District
Three for recognizing and honoring
the latě State FAC Gladys Yates on
Sunday, January 16. The Gladys
Yates Memoriál Endowment Fund
has exceeded $10,000. Thank you so
kindly to all of the many members
who háve contributed to this fund.
I remember exactly one year ago
this week. Gladys and her husband,
James, were enjoying life aboard a
cruise. Just the other day, I ran across
a photo of Gladys taken at the Spring
District Youth Counselor Meeting—
hours before she and James were to
leave on the cruise. I remember how
excited she was that day. She kept
talking about the cruise and how
much she still had to do to get ready
for it. Several of us at the meeting
kept telling her to go home and start
packing ... but, those of us who knew
Gladys, know that SPJST and every-
one around her always came first in
her life.
Gladys was the most giving and
caring person that I háve ever met. I
feel so blessed to háve had her in my
life. I know that Gladys will always
háve a very speciál plače in all of the
youth and adult members’ li ves whom
she touched as State FAC and as an
SPJST member. Her memory will
live on forever in the SPJST through
her examples of fraternalism and
through the Gladys Yates Memoriál
