With Alí Sincerity...
This past week, I visited by tele-
phone with Publication Committee
Secretary Helen Kelner of Lodge 28,
East Bernard, regarding that commit-
tee’s annual meeting set for April 10 at
the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Iťs
an annual opportunity for the
Publication Committee to get together
and evaluate the effectiveness of the
Věstník and the Editor over the preced-
ing twelve months; moreover, iťs an
opportunity to put on our thinking caps
and make recommendaíions relating to
the development of SPJST’s internal
and external com-
munication efforts.
Over the past three
years, for example,
the Publication
Committee has rec-
ommended that the
SPJST také steps to
establish a leader-
ship role in the area
of new generation
marketing, via the
Internet. As you
may recall from the
January 20 editori-
al, the Supreme
Lodge, in their ********
January meeting,
voted to proceed with this project. (See
bottom, right column of page 4 of this
week’s Věstník for details relating to this
action.)
The Publication Committee invites
your input for their April 10 meeting in
Temple. Better yet, consider attending
the meeting and make your observations
and/or recommendations in person. As
Editor, one of my primary concerns
regarding the Vestnik is that of balanced
reportage. While we all use the Vestnik
to present the many positive aspects of
membership in the SPJST, we must also
accept our role as conscientous stewards
and utilize the Vestnik as a vehicle for
presenting and then addressing the chal-
Ienges facing our fraternal order and our
local lodges. I am confident that we
háve the capacity and creativity neces-
sary to tackle the difficult issues.
Members are invited to attend and to
participate in the open-door meeting
which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on
April 10. In advance of that session, I
would like to address the matter and
receive your input at the Lodge
Officers’ Workshop at Lodge 177,
Academy on February 27.
In preparing this week’s páper, I ran
across an interesting item from the
February 16, 1949 edition of the
Vestnik. The ideas expressed in the arti-
cle, which follows in italics, are as třmě-
ly now as when they were penned a half
century ago by Associate Editor Stepán
Valcik:
Nothing is more important to a Pro-
gressive cause than the written message
through the the printed word. Unity can
be promoted. Information and guidance
can be bolstered. George Washington
undoubtedly was the greatest leader of
"'We must
their loy
their enthusi
their initiative,
their devo
ofhearts,
and souls."
the American Revolution, but had it not
been for the stimulating messages writ-
ten and published by Thomas Paine, who
explained why the colonists must win, it
is doubtful if the Father of our Country
would háve had armies to command.
This unpretentious publication,
although printed on a regular newsprint
páper, without glossy illustrations and
fancy titles, has been highly prized by
thousands of our members for several
decades . . . For thirty-six years (make
that eighty-six, today), it has been giv-
ing the members of our SPJST a voice,
as of making their feelings and wishes
______ and plans to be
m'//
follow to give the
present members,
old or young, a
voice to talk, to
pian,and to bring
about greater
achievements in
the future.
With all sinceri-
ty, your Press
Committee (today,
iťs the Publi-
cation Commit-
tee), deserves a
great deal ofcredit
for making Vestnik
what it is today and what improvements
will be made in the future . . . The Press
Committee, consisting of Brother
Hornak, Sister Horák, and Sister Olexa
háve devoted considerable planning to
make the organ more useful They dis-
cussed the editorial policy thoroughly
with long-range objectives. They
stressed over and again that the promo-
tion of the SPJST fraternity must be
paramount.
It was pointed out that the English
Section must háve broader appeal to the
members. As Sister Horák aptly and
truthfully stated, we, the SPJST mem-
bers of the Czech parentage, háve lost
completely one generation . . . What we
háve failed to do for the first generation,
we must avoid to repeat regarding the
younger generation. We must earn their
loyalty, their enthusiasm, their initiative,
their devotion of hearts, minds, and
souls.
To promote the interest in our SPJST
fraternity, we shall strive to plače our
official organ in the home of every
member. To háve a broader appeal to
the members, it will be necessary to
carry a variety ofreading matter so that
every member of the family would fmd
in it something of interest.
Consequently, the páper is being pre-
pared every week with these thoughts in
mind. It was founded thirty-six (eighty-
six) years ago to be the voice of the
members, and it is still dedicated to the
same purpose.
To all our members who contribute to
the pages of Vestnik to stimulate broad-
er appeal and thereby promote interest
in the work of local lodges or the whole
SPJST, to all of you our sincere thanks.
