The Charles Bridge
The Czech city of Prague is famous for its many bridges.
The most well known of these bridges is the Charles Bridge
that crosses the Vltava river in Prague, Czech Republic. Its
construction started in 1357 under the direction of King Charles IV, and was
completed at the beginning of the 15th century. As the only means of Cross-
ing the river Vltava, the Charles Bridge was the most important connection
between the Old Town, Prague Castle and the surrounding areas until 1841.
Also this “solid-land” connection made Prague important as a trade routě
between east and west Europe. The bridge was originally called the Stone
Bridge or the Prague Bridge but has been the “Charles Bridge” since 1870.
The bridge is 564 yards long and nearly 11 yards wide, resting on 16
arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two of
them on one side and the third one on the “Old Town” side. The Old Town
bridge tower is considered to be one of the best examples of civil gothic-
style architecture in the world. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley
of 30 statues, most of them baroque-style, installed around 1700. The stat-
ues depict popular saints of the day. Beginning in 1965, all of the statues
háve been replace by replicas and the originals háve been exhibited in the Na-
tional Museum.
At night Charles Bridge is a quiet plače. During the day, it changes its

face into a very busy plače, with painters, and traders along with numerous
tourists Crossing the bridge.
You may háve seen Charles Bridge in the past and not recognized it. The
bridge appears in the action fílms Mission: Impossible and XXX. It has also
appeared in an episode of the CBS television show, Amazing Race Asia. An-
other recent appearance of the Charles Bridge is a scene in the Playstation 3
game Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
