The First Step
In the course of a year, lodge lead-
ers encounter many challenges and
opportunities. One of the biggest
challenges is keeping their members
motivated and involved.
So, how can we do that?
“The first step is to serve,” offers
Char McBee of Austin. Ms. McBee is
author of the book, To Lead Is to Sezve:
How to Attract Volunteers and Keep
Them. An organizational leader her-
self, Ms. McBee met with 75 other vol-
unteer leaders in researching the book.
Iťs a challenge taking what amounts to
a 230-page lodge officeťs training
guide and summarizing it in just a few
words. Iťs hard to do it justice. Good
things také time. Building a strong fra-
temal program is like that, too . . . In
the coming weeks, we’11 be citing pas-
sages from her book — and other
sources — aimed at bringing new life
and vitality to our lodge systém.
In Chapter One, Ms. McBee tells
the story about a king and his son.
“They loved each other very much but
they could not get along so the son
left home and went far away,” she
writes. “After a while, word reached
the father that the son was not doing
well. The king sent a message to the
prince and said, ‘Come home,’ but the
prince was too proud. He sent a mes-
sage back to his father, ‘I cannot.’
“Then the king sent another mes-
sage saying, ‘Just turn around and
come as far as you can, and I will
meet you wherever you are.’”
This little story expresses the
essence of what it means to “lead by
serving.” It has absolutely nothing to
do with bossing people around. It has
everything to do with championing a
cause and meeting others halfway — or
better — in order to achieve success.
When the principle of “leaming to
give” is applied, says Ms. McBee, “It
can create an energetic and loyal vol-
unteer work force, which is priceless.”
Also, in taking on any volunteer pro-
ject, iťs important to let the members
know from the start that they are appre-
ciated. Before beginning a speciál pro-
ject, spend time listening to everyone’s
ideas. It will pay off in the long run
advises Ms. McBee. “This gives the
volunteers an investment in the project
before it begins. Afterward, listen to
people’s comments and praise. Honor
their good feelings about a job well
doně by listening to them.”
Watch for Ms. McBee’s “Five Keys
for Running a Successful Meeting” in
next week’s Vestnik.
