Two Key Ingredients
As much as I like to eat barbecue,
I’ ve never been much of a cooker. To
be really good at anything — whether
iťs barbecuing or building a success-
ful fraternal program — takés desire
and commitment. Now, just because
I don’t fancy myself as a cooker, that
doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy helping
out at cookouts or cook-offs. It can
be fun. You don’t háve to run the
show to be an important part of the
process.
Building a strong fraternal pro-
gram works the same way! While
active participation in your local lodge
is not a requirement, it is active partic-
ipation that brings life and vitality to
your lodge and to the SPJST. Once
again, you don’t háve to run the show
to be an important part of the process.
As important as the sále of life
insurance is to our Society, it isn’t bal-
ance sheets alone that make the
SPJST story worth telling. Iťs the
stories of men, women and children
whose lives háve been enriched as a
result of active participation. At its
best, the lodge experience can become
a form of self-expression as weil as an
extension of a membeťs sociál and
community life.
Thaťs an awesome obligation for a
lodge to fulfill and to maintain! But
it happens!
In many parts of the statě, the
SPJST is known as much for its con-
tributions to celebrating Czech her-
itage and culture and contributing to
the quality of life as it is for life
insurance. Not surprising is the fact
that many of our top-producing
lodges — in terms of insurance sales
— are those which promote strong
fraternal programs and partnerships
within the community.
Fraternalism is all about working
together to achieve common goals and
to make life better for our fellow man.
In the words of author and volunteer
leader Shar McBee, “It is in giving that
we receive . . . If we want people to
foliow us, we háve to meet them where
they are. Leading them means hejping
them fulfill their needs.”
Even if you’ve never been involved
in your local lodge, please give it a
chance. Honestly, I don’t know of a
single lodge officer out there who
woukhťt welcome having a few new
hands on deek. Most, I believe, are
ready to welcome new volunteers
with open arms.
