music. At the University, she met and
married Roman Jakobson, founder of
the Prague Linguistic Circle, who
would receive international recogni-
tion as a linguist and scholar.
Svatava’s fteldwork in folk music
and ethnography took her to Poland,
Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, and Rumania.
In 1939, the impending Nazí takeover
forced her and her husband to leave
the University of Brno and escape to
Denmark. They stayed there briefly,
fleeing ahead of the Nazi armies into
Norvvay where they endured train
bombings, hiding in the mountains,
and sleeping in a hay bam. Crossing a
bridge into Sweden in a horse-drawn
sleigh, the Jakobson!s vvere briefly
jailed and fmally reached Stockholm
in May 1940. Still in per i 1, they
sought the help of the American
Ambassador and eventually acquired
the papers that would permit them to
leave for the United States.
As Roman taught linguistics at
Columbia, Harvard, and MIT, Svatava
was a lecturer in Czech language and
Slavic folklóre at Harvard. She con-
tinued her interest in folk music,
working with John Lomax, and his
son, Alan, who was curator of the
Archive of American Folksong of the
Library of Congress
While in New York, she wrote a
regular column for Czech immigrants
for the newspaper, Nove- Yorkse Listy.
and in the latě 1940s, served as editor-
in-chief of the magazíne, America, a
statě department publication.
In 1967, after she and Roman had
divorced, Svatava came to teach for a
year in the Department of Slavic
Languages and Literatuře at the
University of Texas at Austin.
Captivated by the Czech communities
in East Central Texas, she chose to
make Austin her home, teaching
Czech language and literatuře at UT
for a decade, researching the culture
of the Moravian immigrants to texas,
and gaining a reputation throughout
the statě for her scholarship and
involvement.
Despite her status as a naturalized
citizen of the United States since
1952, Svatava was denied a visa for
visit to her beloved Czechoslovakia
until 1968 when a liberalization of the
communist regime occurred there.
During her visit that year, she was
temporarily trapped in Prague when
Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces invad-
ed the country. In the chaos, she
escaped to the West and returned to
Austin to continue her teaching career.
Fdr the 1976 bicentennial celebra-
tion, Svatava was asked by the
Smithsonian Institution to arrange and
coordinate participation of all Eastem
European countries in the folk festival
on the National Mali.
After her retirement from the
University of Texas in 1978, Svatava
continued to work with students, mon-
itoring their projects and extending
her own ethnographic studies of the
Texas Czechs. She donated more than
3,000 books, hundreds of tapes and
recordings and a vast collection of
Czech newspapers to University of
Texas libraries.
- In 1993, she received the Texas
Czech Heritage Award for her contri-
butions to the preservation and pro-
motion of Czech heritage in the statě.
