sales representatives, the SPJST has
been able to do well.
Sales Representatives
Once again our “Top Thirty Sales
Representatives” deserve a very speciál
“Thank You” from the entire
membership of the Society. Over 50
percent of all Insurance written was
accomplished by these thirty dedicated
volunteers. The remainder of our
insurance sales was divided amongst
four hundred and fořty
representatives. I would like to
introduce the membership to the
SPJST “Top Thirty” for 1984.

State Field Managers Smith and
McBride once again háve served the
SPJST well. It is a thankless job that
these two men háve but each dav they
give the best of their ability for our
Society.
SPJST Insurance Products
The plans we háve for the SPJST
product portfolio is second to none.
This past year we began marketing
annuities with great success. As of this
report our yield is 12 percent until
January 31, 1985. February 1 through
April 30, 1985 the yield will be 11.5
percent. This high yield we must credit
to good sound investments,
conservative management practice and
a dedicated home office staff whose
only concern is to give top notch
Service and yield to our membership. I
personally am proud to be associated
with the team that we feel is producing
positive results to insure SPJST
successes in future years.
We devolped a Joint Decreasir;
Term certificate on the 1980 CSO tah
andWbave a new Single Prémium Life
product aiso on the 1980 CSO, just
about ready íor our membership. 1985
will also bring new challeiíges as we
will begin work on a Universal Life
Certificate. We know this will entail a
great deal of additionai workload at
the home office but we also realize this
product is in the best interest of our
membership.
Certificate Service
I am proud to once again telí you of
all the compliments I háve received
from members telling me of the
outstanding personál Service they háve
received from the Insurance
Department. We know we are here to
serve the membership and try to do
this to the běsí of our ability.
Sum máry
With all the changes on the horizon
we know we will háve to put all our
shoulders to the wheel for all these
programs to be successful. We are
ready to accept, for you, this
challenge. Remember all this progress
starts with the sales representatives
production. Encourage your sales
representatives, help them to be
successful because if they are winners,
we all win.
Thank you for your cooperation in
1984. I promise you we will be giving
our best effort for the benefit of you,
the members of the SPJST.
Fraternally,
Bernard M. Gebala
Vice President
conservative but aggressive. We strive
for the highest possible return with the
least expectation of risk. We continue
to look for methods to improve our
reíurns withcuí subsíantially
increasing our risk. We are pleased.
that good investment returns will make
it possible to continue attractive rates
on our SPJST annuity. The rate
řečeníly set for the period from
January 31, 1985 to April 30, 1985 is
11.5 percent. We continue to pursue
new investment opportunities brought
about by the changes around us but for
the present find that the three
traditional groups, (mortgage loans,
bonds and stocks) best meet a large
portion of our investment needs.
Mortgage loans to members continue
to be the largest single category
accounting for over $25 million of our
assets. The Suprerne Lodge considers
our mortgage loan department to be a
valuable membership Service. The
recent computerization of the entire
mortgage department enables us to
keep down our Service costs thereby
making it possible to maximize our net
yield on mortgage loans. The current
fixed rate on mortgage loans is 12.5
percent. The maximum repayment
period on our mortgage loans is twenty
years. We require one year
membership before we will consider an
application for a mortgage loan.
Additionally, if the applicant and
spouse do not háve at least $25,000 of
life insurance in force, the additionai
insurance must be purchased before
the application will be onsidered.
Over $7 million of our assets are
invested in high grade bonds. For
many years, we háve pursued the
policy of relatively short maturities on
bond investments. This has enabled us
to reinvest a good portion of this
category at the higher current rates and
we continue to keep our bond
maturities relatively short. Liquidity is
an added benefit of this policy. The
remainder of our $36.8 million of
assets are invested in stocks and other
miscellaneous categories.
Benefits to members. During 1984
the SPJST paid $724,784.01 in death
benefits; $149,337.34 in endowments;
and $218,666.95 in surrender values.
All totaled, death claims together with
lodge and various member benefits
amounted to over $2 million.
Administrativě Department. Much
of our time and energy is devoted to
adapting to the vast changes in the
rules, regulations and laws governing
us and new developments in the
insurance industry. We are committed
to keep up with the changes that affcct
the SPJST and to chart a course that
will insure our growth and progress.
We are further committed to providing
our membership with more and better
Services.
Much progress was made this past
year in the area of office automation
Although we feel we now háve a model
systém that will efficiently meet our
needs for years to come, we will
continue to strive to improve it. We are
proud of the fact that a number of
insurance organizations háve visited
our facility to study our Computer
systems and procedures.
In closing, I thank all of you for your
cooperation this past year. 1 am very
proud of the friendship and fraternal
concern you express for one another.
May you háve a very good year in
1985.
Fraternally yours,
Leonard D. Mikeska

Annual Report
As we look forward to an exciting
and productive 1985, we briefly look
back at 1984, most definitely an
“outstanding year of progress for the
SPJST.” We are pleased to notě that
the results of the operations of our
Society háve shown good growth.
Progress has continued in our office
automation plans. A remarkable
growth in assets of over $2.5 million
has been realized.
In the area of fraternal activities, we
háve witnessed strong charitable
community involvement by our local
lodges in many areas all over Texas.
The many Services performed are
ample evidence that fraternalism in the
SPJST is alive and well.
Investments. Our investment policy
can be generally deseribed as
Financial Secretary’s
Report For 1984
We háve agreed in our Suprerne
Lodge meeting that each officer make
an annual report to the members. This
report will cover items that I am
responsible for.
Financial Statement. Our assets for
1984 increased by two and one - half
million dollars. In going back to the
history of SPJST, this was the largest
increase ever, even though, our last
convention cost the Society around
$350,000 00, Our totai income
amounted to approximately six and
one - half million dollars with all
expenses of nearly four million doilars.
Assets now amount to near thirty -
seven million dollars.
Prémium Refund. AU prémium
refund checks were forwarded to each
lodge for distribution to their
members. We issued 38,000 checks
which amounted to over $581,000.00.
All addresses now appear on each
prémium refund check. In 1985, these
checks will be forwarded to each
member by the Home Office. This
became necessary due to the new
option passed at our last convention
called “Paid - up Additions.” Each
recipient of a prémium refund check
will be notified of this option. This
option will enable our members to
purchase addtional insurance which
will be carried and accounted for on
the certificate records of the originál
certificate as a trailer record for the
additionai amount of paid - up
insurance. Please notify the Home
Office of your local lodge on any
change of address that you may háve.
The rate of refund for 1985 was set at 3
percent. All checks will be issued
according to the anniversary dáte of
each certificate.
Refund to Lodges. The 8 percent
refund to lodges was forward on 1-
03-85 to all local lodge Financial
secretaries. This refund amounted to
over $178,000.00 This revenue was
generated from first year sales and
renewals of our sales representatives’
production during 1984. Coilection of
premiums amounted to $2,277,751.00.
