Také a Close Look
A fatal injury occurs every six
minutes and a disabling injury occurs
every two seconds according to the
National Safety Council. Every year,
unintentional injuries kill more
Americans between the ages of one
and 44 than any other cause including
cancer, heart disease and stroke. In
an effort to promote public awareness
and ultimately decrease the number
of injuries and deaths, the National
Safety Council has designated June
as National Safety Month. In fact,
they've devoted an entire website
devoted to the topič: http://www.
nsc.org/nsm/index.cfm.
Preparedness is not just for disas-
ters, terrorism or weather emergen-.
cies. It also applies to life insurance.
When was the last time you took a
look at your SPJST insurance certifi-
cate? Éven the most well-planned
insurance program becomes outdat-
ed. For that reason, iťs a good idea
to occasionally review your certifi-
cate and see if it still fits your needs.
Sometimes, a marriage, death,
birth or divorce may affect the origi-
nál beneficiary and settlement
arrangements as outlined by the cer-
tificate. It makes sense to check and
see if the arrangements you made
when your certificate was issued are
still okay, or will the insurance pro-
ceeds be going to the wrong people
— or paid out in a way that makes
little sense.
Young people, especially, are
encouraged to examine their certifi-
cate coverage. They may fínd that
they can purchase more protection
for their money today than if they
wait to buy it in later years. Older
members, too, will want to talk with
their local sales representatives about
the life insurance and annuity prod-
ucts available to them.
For more information or to review
your current coverage, please contact
your local lodge sales representative
or contact the Insurance Department
at (800) 727-7578 and they will put
you in touch with a sales representa-
tive in your area.

Helping Others Win
“A candle loses nothing by lighting
another candle. ”
— Author Unknown
In my E-mail last week, I received
a thoughtful letterfrom Sister Marian
Kadlécek of Lodge 88, Houston
along with a story that helps to illus-
trate the importance of winning in
life — not “winning at all costs, ” but
rather, doing what it takés to help
others win. I want to share that story
with you:
A few years ago, at the Seattle
Speciál Olympics, nine contestants,
all physically or mentaíly chalíenged,
assembled at the starting line for the
100-yard dash. At the gun, they all
started out — not exactly in a dash
— but with a relish to run the race to
the finish and win. All, thafis,
except one little boy who stumbled
on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple
of times, and began to cry. The other
eight heard the boy cry. They síowed
down and looked back. Then they all
turned around and went back . . .
every one of them.
One girl with Down’s Syndrome
bent down and kissed him and said,
“This will make it better.” Then all
nine linked arms and walked together
to the finish line. Everyone in the sta-
dium stood, and the cheering went on
for several minutes. People who
were there are still telling the story.
Why? Because deep down we
know this one thing: What matters in
this life is more than winning for our-
selves. What matters in this life is
helping others win — even if it
sometimes means slowing down and
changing our course. If you pass this
on, we may be able to change our
hearts as well as someone else’s.
