Four toppers
turn tables on
traveling tarok
troupe
by Barbara Rosenkranz
State Fratemal Activities Coordinator
With averages between 122.7 and
131.7, four Tarok players emerged
from the heap to plače first, second,
third and fourth at the 1999 Tarok
Toumament held at SPJST Lodge 92,
Fort Worth. These toppers in Taroks
are: Ed Scaff, first plače, Alton
Demel, Second plače, Jennifer
Březina, third plače and Rick
Heitzman, fourth plače. The travel-
ing troupe of 40-60 Tarok players
who criss-cross the statě for love of
the game, gave it up to these top four
players for the day.
The toumament. held on August
14. was blessed with a bevy of blithe-
some Tarok baccalaureates bení on
besting their buddies for the day’s
blue ribbon. (Transiation: they were
happy to be there and swore to beat
the pants off their friends this day.)
The amazing thing about Taroks is
when ‘you’re bot, you’re hot and
when you’re not, you’re not.” Some
of the players ušed to being at the top
of the heap ended up at the bottom
and vice-versa, but thaťs the mystery
of the game.
Tarok uses all your mental facili-
ties and is a chaííenge. but not reallv
difficult to learn. However, to win a
Tarok Toumament, voifd better be
either verv lucky, or háve all of your
bio-rhythms, physicai and mental
ťacilities running at warp-speed.
Listed at the bottom of this article
are the August 14, Fort Worth Tarok
Toumament, warp-speed players:
Congratulations again to Ed Scaff,
Alton Demel, Jennifer Březina and
Rick Heitzman for winning first
through fourth places.
To Agnes, thank you. You are
always so generous to donate your
handmade items as dooř prizes. I am
really enjoying the jelly beán jar. If s
on rny desk.
Helen and Albert—what can I say?
I think benevolent is the best word to
use to deseribe you two. It wouldiťt
happen without you (what sleepless
nights?) Bclieve me, Helen, when I
say that more SPJST members than
you could possibly know, become
insomniacs around event time! After
all, SPJST participated in or hosted
over 5,200 events last year.
Somebody wasivt sleeping!
As always, what a great lunch pro-
vided by the Fort Worth group!
Those of us who attend Tarok tourna-
ments don’t háve to worry about los-
ing our extra-seat-padding. Who is
strong enough to resist that delicious
homemade food? Thanks to the
ladies and gents who provided the
desserts and served the lunch.
So, along we go to the next touma-
ment. Players: teach your kids, your
grandkids, your friends, your neigh-
bors, your cousins, your second
cousins, your pastor, your wife/hus-
band, your boss, etc. Hold classes at
your iodges. communiíy centers,
homes, etc. Leťs resurrect this 500
year-old-game like nevěr before.
The next toumaments are October
30—Lodge 29, Taylor. Frank
Schlesinger, coordinator; and
December 4......Lodge 48, Beyersville,
Bobby Wuensche, coordinator.
Notě: For Tarok debutantes des-
tined to dabble in the game, who
despair of delving too deeply as a
dilettante in the divertive disciplině,
grab your cards and dig in.
