Announcement
VPJST will officially announce
plans for the Fort Hood Living Me-
moriál Garden at a press conference
on Wednesday, February 10, 2010,
in the Speciál Events Room at
Killeen Civic and Conference Cen-
ter, located at 3601 South W S
Young Drive in Killeen, Texas. Cof-
fee/refreshments will be served at
1:30 p.m., and the press conference
begins at 2 p.m. We cordially invite
members, friends, and the media to
attend.
Presenters will include Connie
Kuehl, Director of the Killeen Civic
and Conference Center; Brian Van-
iček, President of SPJST Fraternal
Life Insurance; and Timothy Han-
cock, Killeen Mayor and Chairman
of the Speciál Events Committee of
the Killeen Civic and Conference
Center.
Plans for the project will be pre-
sented along with details on how
businesses, schools, churches, youth
groups, civic organizations, and in-
terested men, women, boys and girls
can get involved.
Like all casualties of war, the men
and women whose lives were lost in
Fort Hood, Texas, as a result of the
November 5,2009, shooting will not
beforgotten. They will be moumed,
and they will be remembered for
their brave devotion and Service to
their country. In the wake of this
tragédy, we join hearts and hands in
the planning and construction of a
living memoriál garden, honoring
the lives that were lost that day. The
Fort Hood Living Memoriál Garden
will be a living memoriál to those
who died and a testimony to the
beauty that can be achieved when we
work together.
Seeing a Miracle
Iťs been 10 years since Lodge
177, Academy Vice President Louis
Driska experienced what some
would call a miracle.
On New Year’s Day in 2001,
Louis, who was blind in one eye
most of his life, woke up and could
see just fine.
In 1926, Louis’ eye was damaged
in an accident. Louis’ parents rented
a room in their home to a school
teacher, Anton Noska. “I was two
years and 10 months old,” Driska
said in a feature story in the January
29,2001, Temple Daily Telegram. “I
was crawling on the porch while he
was whittling a stick. I stood up and
grabbed his shoulders with both my
hands.
“He grabbed me, because he
thought I was going to fall. When he
grabbed me, he had that knife in his
hand and stabbed me in the (left)
eye.”
Driska did not visit a doctor be-
cause it was about 15 miles away,
and he doesn’t recall if the family
had a vehicle.
So he went through life with the
use of only one good eye—his right
one. He never let that bother him as
he lived a normál life.
He was one happy, seeing man on
