Could You Repeat That?
Appearing in this week’s “Readers
Write” section is a letter from Brother
Alvin Seťcik of Lodge 172, Pasadena. In
his letter, Brother Seťcik makes several
observations relative to the recent SPJST
convention held in Arlington. One idea
that he makes reference to is that of tápe
recording convention proceedings.
In the course of quick-moving deliber-
ations, it can be difťicult to capture all of
what is stated. Taped proceedings would
provide an additional measure of accura-
cy to the process. Moreover, it might
mmmmmm^ encourage more
thoughtful and

sion with an empha-
sis on achieving
organizational goals
and objectives.
In addition to tak-
ing written minutes,
it is not uncommon
within various public
forums to also main-
tain an audio or an

According to Legal Advisor.Sidney
Kacir, the tax law seems to be question-
able on whether one can claim tax
deductibility when considering only a
speciťic group of individuals.
How will this affect the program? Iťs
diťficult to say. One of the issues that has
been raised is that the new guidelines
weigh heavily in ťavor of active youth
dub participants — over young people
who were not involved in a youth club or,
perhaps, did not háve access to one.
In recent years, the generál scholar-
ship program has experienced signiťi-
cant growth, due in large part, to its
capacity to i n vol ve boíh active and nen-
ačti ve segments of the Society. Under
the new guidelines, related programs
such as the “100 Pennies Scholarship
Drive” will be monitored dosely, says
President Leshikar.
“The Supreme Lodge wants to do
everything it can to recognize active
involvement,” he stated, “There are a lot
of variables that we will be looking at
over the coming year. At the end of the
1997 scholarship season, we will review
all of the information and input that we
háve received and make adjustments, as
necessarv.”
In conjunction with the 1996 -1997
Scholarship Season, President Leshikar
announced that the annual “100 Pennies
Scholarship Drive” would run from
October 1 - December 31. The goal, dur-
ing the SPJST’s centennial year, is to pre-
sent 100 scholarships.
čems also maintain this kind of documen-
tation in their archives.
Is it time ťor the SPJST to ťollow the
same routě with regard to recording its
important meetings? Iťs an idea that is
certainly worth considering. Thanks to
Brother Seťcik ťor his letter and his
observations.

Fraternalism Builds Optimism
The sociál lije of a community is vety
important. Discord grows from lack of
friendly contact among residents.
Fraternalism provides a practical and
sensible way for people to understand
each other. In the lodge meetings new
and lasting friendships are formed and
the lives of the lodge members made rich-
er, Juller and happier through these con-
tacts.
The fraternal field worker can look to
the future with confidence. Almost every
change in the economic structure of the
country has been to Fraternalism’s
advantage. Past developments and future
trends are bringing new opportunities for
the fraternal field worker.
It is with that same spirit of optimism
that we believe that within a few years
the sales of fraternal lije insurance will
double and will continue to inerease
thereafter. The opportunity is here today.
Far grater opportunities are unfolding
for the future.
