Iťs Time to
Look Forward
Meeting Human Needs
The SPJST is 100 years old. We cele-
brated our anniversary on July 12 and 13
with a big party at the Bell County Expo
Center in Belton. It was fun — but, like
our Society’s firsí convention in
Fayettevilie, Texas, iťs history. Then, as
now, the key to SPJST’s success has been
the active participation of its members.
Now is the time to start planning for
successful member participation in our
increasingly clear. A third of the country
has been hit by the floods. Poland and
East Germany háve also been affected.
Approximately 50 Czech towns and 300
viílages háve been affected. Experts are
saying that it will také approximately 100
billion crowns — or roughly $3 billion
US dollars and a year of work to fully
recover form the worst flood in living
memory.
Hundreds of homes háve been
Society’s second century. It will require destroyed or badly damaged and roads,
creativity, initiative and an organizational rad and telecommunications links háve
commitment to looking ahead and develop- been cut- ManY companies háve been
ing long-term marketing strategies to meet forced t0 reduce or stoP production and
the changing needs of its members and thousands of acres of crops háve been

bers. Our future
depends on our will-
ingness and ability to

In a very reál and
enjoyable way, last
week’s Bestfest
brought together
many and diverse
elements of our
Society. And there-
in lies our strength
— in our diversity.
The SPJST is a soci-
ety that members can join for any num-
ber of reasons. Iťs a package deal built
upon the idea of addressing human needs
— financial, sociál and cultural. The
ability to meet those needs and uphold
strong human values is the mortar that
holds the society together.
More on Czech Flooding
Last week’s “Czech News and
Culture” section of the Vestnik carried an
update on the recent flooding devastating
parts of Moravia in the Czech Republic.
A number of readers responded to the
article with requests for additional infor-
mation.
At press time, Rádio Prague reports
that clean up operations were underway
— with more rain in the forecast. The
flooding has so far claimed 46 lives and
the enormity of damages is becoming
swamped.
The Czech
environment minis-
ter Jiri Skalický,
whom the cabinet
placed in charge of
the situation, has
set the govern-
menťs priorities in
renewing access to
clean drinnking
water, reestablish-
ing electrical Ser-
vice and rebuilding
roads.
Individuals or
groups wanting to
assist in the Czech
wmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmZ flood relief effort
are encouraged to
send coníributions to the American Red
Cross, 2218 Pershing Drive, Austin,
Texas 78723 and indicate that the gift is
for Czech Flood Victims Relief.
Likewise, collection efforts are under-
way by the American Fund for
Czechoslovak Relief (AFCR). They are
at 1776 Broadway, Suitě 2105, New
York, NY 10019.
And, flnally, Fr. Steven Nesrsta of St.
Mary’s Catholic Church in Temple,
Texas provides Vestnik readers with the
foliowing address for those wishing to
donate in the relief effort. Send cashieťs
checks to:
