BOY DROWNS
Melvern Edson Jumps Off of ferry
into deep water and is drowned.
Body Recover!
Melvern Edson age 16 years
while with some other young
men on the ferry across the
East Carancachua Saturday
afternoon leaped off and going-
into water beyond his depth
was drowned before assistance
could reach him,
"1 he funeral was held Sunda,f
morning, Mr. Hatch officiating,
after which the body was buried
on a five acre tract belonging to
the deceased.
Young Edson and some other
’bo}7s had been playing on the
ferry leaping from it into the
water. Some parties came
along to cross on the ferry and
the boys started to pull it back
to them. When almost in the
middle of the stream Edson
leaped off evidently thinking the
water was shallow. He at once
went underand it was more than'
an hour and a half before
his body could be located.
Justice of Peace Joines was
called up from LaWard and
with Deputy Sheriff Whitaker
held an inquest, the jury holding
that the death was entirely
accidental.
Edson lived with a brother and
his grandfather, Mr. Chadwick
across the river, and was an
orphan. The family came here
from Palmyra, Neb.

Farm and Factory
____
There is no better way of helping
the farmer than by building factories,
The farmers of Texas* are" compelled
in many instances to ship products
across the ocean in order to reach th«S
factory. We are world factors In ag-
riculture. Our cotton and wool clothes
the human race; our- meats supply tha
larder of nations and our cereals fill
the granaries of the world, but we are
in the main dependent upon other
states and countries to manufr.rtv.rQ,

long and our annual production on Its
way to the foreign factory ■will form'
a gigantic parade that will reach
around the world three times and It
will require eleven years to pass a
given point. It is a golden stream of
prosperity flowing out of the state and
on its bosom floats factories, cities
and millions of happy homes, it is
laden with opportunities destined for
the people of the whole world and it
furnishes life giving substances to the
withering veins of European nations.
The parade costs $200,000 per day
and $75,000,000 per annum and is paid
for by the sweat of those who till the
soil. Our public servants who desire
to do something more than swim
around undevoured in the waters of
public life should watch the parade.
Our raw material on its journey to the
foreign factory forms one of the most
colossal pageantries In the history of
the human race and is the cimmereial
tragedy of the Twentieth century.

Credit Farming
The credit system used by many
farmers in the state Is more damag-
ing to agricultural Interests than the
boll weevil. No farmer can thrive and
pay the debts of his neighbors which
Is the inevitable result of the credit
system. Debt Is a hard taskmaster
and it saps the vitality of every man
and every line of industry that is
within its clutches. The merchant and
banker should help the farmer get on
a cash basis. "When the farmer has a
good bank account we are all prosper-

Road Building
"Road building Is a science," said
G. L. Cooley, representing the good
roads department of the Federal gov-
ernment at the Good Roads Conven-
tion at the Dallas Fair last fall. “There
is no more reason why a man should
work out his road tax than that he
should teach out his school tax. We
