LEISURE CITY, FLA.— Builders of Florida Sun Deck Homes :
^iere, employ a unique cannon to»shoot a molded concrete house rein-
forced with steel.
' Florida Sun Deck Homes has been launched with the opening of
a 2,600-acre tract providing room for 6,000 houses priced at §5,2K0
near Homestead, 20 miles south of Miami on Biscavne Bay and
U. S. Highway 1.
Frank A. Vellanti Jr., who built concrete and steel structures in
Manhattan Beach and Sheepshead Bay, N. Y.. a’ld Thomas F. Palmer,
superintendent of construction of the 6th Avenue Subway and the 'j
M est Side Highway in New York, combined their talents to start the
multi-million dollar retirement village of one-bedroom houses.
Styled by Leonard G. Feinen, noted architect of Hasbrouck
Heights, N. J., and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the monolithic houses aha
contain a combination kitchen-living room, hath with shower, and
carport which can he. converted into additional living space.
The cannon technique was employed two years ago by the same
builders in a pilot tract in Hialeah. The houses are made to with-
stand hurricanes and are weather-proof and termite-proof.
The only development of its kind in the country, Leisure C ity
was planned for retirees and pensioners but also has attracted young
.couples from all parts of the country. Carrying charges are $ 0 a
month. The State of Florida allows a $5,000 tax exemption.
Leisure City has been recommended by the Florida State Im-
provement Commission as a development of well-built, low-priced,
and ideally-located homes for retired people.
